For half that price I got a Garmin NUVI with Dashcam. Large screen, lifetime updates, Stores history of places you have been to, has built in traffic, and can get the weather app.

Amazon Amazon

It also records miles driven, has the lane keep alert and collision avoidance alert along with a lot of other features that you wont get in the built in nav. I picked it up when I first got my 14 F150 since it had MFT but no nav. It uses strong magnets to connect to the base, so when I leave the truck I just pres the power button on the back to turn it off and pull it off the base, and either hide it, or put it in my jacket pocket. Only takes a moment, and if I need it for a rental, takes a moment to pop it off the window and unplug the power. You can also plug it into your PC and preplan routes, download videos saved, and pictures saved. You can snap a picture while driving, or save a video for when some fool loses control of their overloaded trailer.

Go ahead and get factory Nav., or better yet test drive a truck with it. There is a bit of a learning curve...... It is also integrated into your truck, while others are not.

Up here in "the Great White North" we are not offered the discounts you people south of the boarder get. Nav. up here is a 800 dollar option! On the plus side our base Lariat is better equipped then the US version. (we do pay a heck of a lot more however)
Same price here... Some trims get $500 rebate at this time, unusual.

I had a similar struggle I ended up getting because......

* I'm not the only person who drives the truck
* the price with the rebate made it acceptable
* I don't want to pay for more data! ( Family of 5 our data bills keep on growing)
* coverage when we go camping isn't always there
* sometime Nav is a real battery suck on my phone even when plugged in

Now I've got my truck I've mostly been using the factory unit but will be testing out CarPlay more.

I'd definitely add the NAV. I have been very pleased with mine and the integration is excellent. I just don't like having accessories that are add ons. Sometimes a hassle with cables and placement.

It's unfortunate that the nav discount isn't available to you, because that's the tipping point for me. $300 bucks -get it, $ 800 bucks - probably no. Android auto w/google maps works great, I download offline maps for areas with no cell service. So much easier to get directions, althought I'm not sure how getting directions works offline - I usually have my destination programed before I loose cell coverage. Also Waze is coming in April to ford applink - I already have it on Android auto, but another option for Apple users. So it's not necessary - just an easier option to phone based nav, it's always there & doesn't need cell service ever.

My '18 came with nav.
The one great feature about factory nav that no one is mentioning is SiriusXM Travel Link.
it gives you live weather including a doppler rader map, gas prices and how close they are, movie theaters and show times, sports scores and I believe stocks.
Its free for 5 years, then you can subscribe without a SiriusXM radio package to the Travel Link alone for about $20 a year.

All those features are on my Android phone...

Weather apps
Gasbuddy
and more.

The key difference is the ability to get those via satellite radio (sky) and cellular (towers).

But he did say he's getting one.

I think those of us who prefer cell phone navigation lean on the fact of more consistent updates and the availability of better apps. Waze has saved me countless hours on the road in the last 4 years. The times I didn't listen to "her", I paid for it by sitting in a jam.
