Do the number of holes on the filters really matter? I'm curious why the black Mobil 1 has 2 less holes for oil flow? Do you guys think the ford filter is comparable with the synthetic filters? It seems to me if you're using synthetic oil, you need a synthetic compatible filter - for the extended service intervals? Maybe not, particularly for those who change regular oil at the same interval as synthetic.

Then again, the factory filter is obviously rated to filter until the oil reminder light comes on. I tend to change my oil a bit earlier than what the light would indicate, so maybe I'm wasting my money on these synthetic filters.

Good point. This was my first oil change, and I was remarkably surprised that the OEM filter came off by hand. It wasn't loose by any means, but no wrench was needed. The OEM filter that came off was solid - I was impressed.

The anti-drainback valve is the orange rubber you can see through the holes.

I always stuck with Motorcraft filters on my previous Ford trucks.
Thanks! I learned something new. I'm comforted that all filters have the orange rubber material. I never knew.

Absolutely not! The superb Motorcraft filter has 7 oval holes.

Absolutely yes, unless you intend to risk negating your warranty by not abiding with Ford's recommended oil change intervals.

Anybody ever try the rare earth magnets on the sides of the filter and then cut them open? Or do you believe that line of reasoning is just marketing beeswax.

That's odd...the Ford filter I pulled off the truck has 8 round holes. It's so weird that the factory filter doesn't match a filter from dealer.

I'd just stick to the motorcraft filter Ford uses. I would not stress to much on a part your going to replace every few months.

Your inquiry likely just started "a **** show" of replies that have been posted untold times on untold pages of this forum. It must be deja vu all over again!

Edit: I just checked...there are at least 20 related threads revealed when using this forum's SEARCH function. Try typing 'oil change intervals'.

Not so weird...the factory filter is branded FoMoCo, not Motorcraft. It is likely sourced from a low bid manufacturer which may or may not be the same as Motorcraft (Purolator). Over the years, some have suggested a variety of manufacturers including Champion Labs. It makes no difference...the FoMoCo filter enabled the vehicle to make it from the assembly line to the dealer.

Also note another difference, i.e. the Motorcraft FL-500S (part no. AA5Z-6714-A) has 30 flutes, many more than the factory filter.
