Oil Consumption
My husband just bought a 2020 F150 Lauriat (5.0 engine) summer 2024. It was high miles but ran great and was 100% serviced at the dealer we purchased it from so we were comfortable paying the $$$ for this truck. Now it's consuming oil at an alarming rate. He does put a lot of miles on the truck weekly but it's running dry in under 2000 miles. (no leaks). Failed the oil consumption test. Was told his truck was not on the bulletin for the PCM update. They checked the PCV and said it was fine. The dealer (not the one we purchased from because we've since moved out of state) says it could be a number of things that would require an engine teardown and still may not know the cause. They recommended an engine replacement $$$$$, We have an third party extended warranty but would have to pay out of pocket for the teardown and if the company decided not to cover the repair, we'll be stuck with a torn down engine and no truck.
We've been just monitoring and adding oil until we decide what to do but yesterday we got a steady CEL (first light we've seen since we purchased the truck). The app says issue is with the emissions and exhaust system.
Just looking for someone who was in the same boat as us. What did you do?

I can't help with the oil problem but I would like to hear how you make out with aftermarket warranty. The " you pay for the teardown and then we will decide what we will pay for, if anything." seems to be a common dodge they use to get out of paying.
Hope that doesn't happen to you, I'll be eager to learn about your ultimate outcome.

I've been on a lot of car and truck forums for many years. In all that time I've never seen the wife of a car owner come into a forum to ask a question for her "husband". Just sayin.....
Hubby doesn't search forums. He's not on social media. He's going to pay someone to get the information he needs and go from there.
I, on the other hand, want to poll the masses to see what we're in for so I don't feel gut punched at the shop.
My husband has an amazing wife! Just saying . . .

the long and short of it is, someone traded the truck in because it was an oil burner and never had it fixed under warranty. the excessive oil burning has now ruining the catalytic converters. the long and skinny is you are up the creak without a paddle.

Its really easy to pull the spark plugs and put a borescope down each cylinder to see what the bore looks like. There is no way a truck should be burning 10 quarts in 2000 miles. Matter of fact if you are not checking the oil every day... that's neglect NO WARRANTY will cover.
You can step the grade of oil up to 10-30... see if there is still a problem because at this point the damage is already done. If 10 quarts went through the exhaust to the cats... they are trash.
A stock spec reman long block Coyote is $4500... figure 19-25 hours shop labor to remove your old engine, swap components, then shop fluids, supplies, etc.
At this point if the cats are trashed... you are looking at more money. Or you could go with a header/y pipe setup and get a universal type convertor.
