OBD Smart Data Link Module
Can anyone tell me can you simply swap this module with a new one or does someone need to alter things within the trucks computer?
I replaced my OEM with an aftermarket Dorman unit and now have a few idiot lights lit! If I swap back to the OEM they go away!?
The OEM had been giving me problems but is working since I took it apart and thoroughly cleaned it. I don’t trust it as one connector is damaged and suspect. This module stopped my engine from turning over!

The Gateway Module (GWM) or Smart Data Link Module requires what Ford refers to a PMI (Programmable Module Installation). This requires the As-build PIDs to be downloaded from either the old module before it is removed or from a Ford website. The As-built PIDs must then be programmed to the new module after it is installed and a module reset preformed. You need Ford IDS software and interface, FORScan and ELM327 interface, or a high end scan tool with Ford programming capabilities to perform this process.
If you re-install the old module it might work, it might not.
The GWM controls all of the CAN buses on the truck, and as you found out, it can cause all sorts of issues if it is not working correctly.
