Default Noise at startup

I have a 2016 XLT with the 5.0 and this afternoon when I started the truck it made a grinding noise for a second. It cranked the engine, paused for less than a second then the engine started with a grinding sound. All this happened in the amount of time it normally takes to start the engine. I know it has tip start so it couldn't have been me. Could it be that the tip start release the starter prematurely? I'm guessing the grinding noise was the starter trying to re-engage when the engine was already running. Afterwards it ran smooth as silk as it usually does. It's only done this one other time. Any ideas?

Not going to bother bringing it in. All they would say is "we couldn't duplicate the problem".

Sounds like you got it figured out on the starter. I also agree that taking it in with it not readily displaying the issue would probably be a waste of time.

Without hearing it, I'd guess you're right too.

However......one thing I noticed is that these trucks now release the starter on their own, despite what you dictate at the key.

IOW, once you turn the key.....the starter will engage only long enough til the engine starts, then regardless of whether you have the key still turned or not, the starter releases.

(This is a good idea, of course, unless it malfunctions which is about how I feel on *all* stuff controlled by the ECM in lieu of driver commands)

Hey there. I have the same issue, but more frequent.
I find it happens when the truck has been sitting for longer than 24 hours.

Please let me know if you find a fix.
