New vs Pre-owned

I think some guys don't know how much the price is negotiable in buying a new truck. When I was shopping all the trucks I was looking at were $12,000-$13,000 under MSRP. Paying $28,000 for a used truck that had an MSRP of 43k is not that great of s deal. That's a good deal on a new one.

my 2015 loaded 2wd 502a lariat was 38xxx with 12k on it. not coming anywhere close to a lariat sport for that much new, especially with my trucks original MSRP of 56k. Ill buy a new one next go around as I am trying to keep these a little longer these days.. My last truck was a brand new every option LTZ silverado, but it was 40k after incentives. The price gap between Chevy and ford was unreal.

I wanted to buy used with low miles (under 15k) but I felt like I was settling for a truck that wasn't the exact color and didn't have the options I desired yet the used price tag was still 35k+. So after endless searching, I ended up ordering an XLT. Now its not a Lariat but it will have all that I desire in my color and package. It cost me 3-4k more all said and done.
Does anyone else think the MSRP concept should just be scrapped by Ford? At least at the XLT level, just price the truck to sell and not play the rebate game.

Yes, I had to spend a good deal of time getting mine down the $10K I knew was possible (not even the best that could be done). It's common knowledge that they do not actually sell at MSRP or even close to it so why pretend? I guess it does let them put it to the folks that want the next model year the minute they can order it. It's does make it fun when the dealers try to convince you that you've just eviscerated them at $8K below MSRP and the "I gotta take this to my sales manager" stuff starts. Could have taken a couple of hours off the process to just start from a reasonable price to begin with.

By the time the rebates start just a few months later you are screwed on the value of that truck. Not only do you lose driving it off the lot, your value is plummeting when someone else can buy the same truck 6 months later for 8k-12k less.

People who want the latest and greatest and buy the new year as soon as it comes out have to take it on the chin if they pay close to MSRP.

I think it depends on the situation and how picky you are. I myself am very picky. I want certain options, colors, and etc. so buying used is kind of difficult for me. Additionally, the 2017 had some upgrades that I valued over the 2016 models. However, that doesn't mean that I would never buy a used truck. Especially if I knew whose truck it was and trusted them. Unfortunately, when you buy used from a dealer you can never be certain as to what abuse it has had. You could get that truck that grandpa drove to the coffee shop and back or you could get that nightmare that someone wrecked 3 or 4 times and patched up.

It's not worth it to buy 1-3, sometimes even 4 year old trucks anymore. You know how you hear "oh let the original owner take the depreciation hit". Well, they did BUT 90% of that depreciation was built right back into the price of the new truck. It's not like they pass on the depreciation savings to you, they don't. That's all profit for them. On used you have to fight tooth and nail to get $1000-1500 off but new I don't even have to fight hard to get thousands knocked off, then I beat for a little more. I'm also noticing these year old to 2,3,4 year old trucks have high miles. Whoever is buying them puts on 20,000 miles a year and then turns them in. They can be leases, maybe they're rental, who knows. All I know is damn if I'm going to buy a year or two old truck with the warranty getting ready to expire. I'll just go buy new unless it's 8-10 years or more older. I'm telling you, you aren't saving as much as you think buying these "new" used trucks. Hell, my dealer has tons of 15's and 16's sitting on the used lot for sometimes higher than you can get a 17 for! Or it's within 1,000 dollars.
