My name is Blake. Im new here but Ive been part of the Stangnet forum for 5-6 years.
I know that there is tons of info on here about the finicky 10 speed transmissions.
But, what I want to know is, how many of you that own trucks with these transmissions have never had a problem?? I am probably going to pull the trigger and buy a 2018 5.0 Crew cab with one. Its a one owner, mostly highway miles and the owner said he has never had a issue with his. 72000 miles. I read alot of horror stories about them and I also see a ton of F150s out there everyday. There has to be alot of these transmissions that have gone on to live long healthy lives. Im in the collision industry and have spoke to a few owners of the trucks we fixed and they have told me that they have never had a problem. But, then you read that there have been owners that had them fail pretty quickly. I just need some reassurance that there are trucks out there that have the 10 speed and are just fine.
Welcome,
This forum is probably like 0.000000000009% of cars out there with 10r80's. So any complaints/issues isnt necessarily an accurate representation of problems as a whole. With that said.
On my 2018, dealer replaced transmission fluid pump and valve body. Fluid pump failed first and sounded like power steering pump starving for fluid(whine) this in turn ruined valve body. Both of these were replaced under warranty at around 40k iirc.
Oh, and obligatory..

I've only owned my truck for 7 months. It currently has 50k miles but either I love this transmission or it likes how I drive. I don't get any hard shifts or weird behavior from it. And I'm coming from a 2003 Ram that I owned for nearly 20 years.
What I don't know is if the dealer reset the transmission to learn how it's new owner drives. Supposedly doing that helps smooth things out.
Im sorry @18LeadLariat . What do you mean by 0.000000009%? Not many owners here with that trans?
I meant that there are millions of 10r80 transmissions out there. This forum has way less users than that, especially users that have truck with 10r80. So if you have users posting their experiences with 10r80 transmission (good/bad) on this forum, this doesnt reflect real world numbers indicating whether or not the transmission is actually good or bad. Basically, issue with 10r80 you see on this forum, take that with a grain of salt, not saying dismiss it entirely, just dont base your opinion on what you see here.
To recap, this transmission does not have any inherit flaws, it is a transmission though, and some will go bad, just like with all other transmissions out there.
I am not a transmission expert and this is only my opinion.
I forgot to add, i really like this 10 speed, even without the tune(i have a tune, but gas is expensive so im back to stock). I had a 17 Tacoma before this truck and it was worth complaining about.
Some of you need some perspective, in general, these 10 speeds are pretty great.

Ah, yes. I get what your saying @18leadlariat. Thats what Ive been thinking as well. I appreciate the info fellas. Ive been driving the same old 2000 Tacoma TRD for 20 years and Im getting anxious to get in the F150. I am keeping the Toyota.. Ive always been a Ford guy. Ive owned 5-6 Foxbody Mustangs, my dad was a Ford guy as well. The truck Im thinking about buying is a 2018 STX FX4, 5.0, 4X4 Crew Cab, white in color. Its a nice, one owner truck. Seems to drive just fine.
I have a 10R80 with 75k miles. It does not have any issues or failures like the CDF drum. Most of the time it runs and shifts like a dream. Every once and a while it shifts when I maybe didn't expect it to and can be harsh, but I note this to programming.
3 of my neighbors also have them, without any issues.
In the future I suggest putting your topic in the thread title and not "please read".
