So a few months ago I had my new wheels and tires installed on my 2016 SuperCrew 4x4. 285/70/17, stock suspension, pretty common. Truck drove great, didn’t pull to either side and the steering wheel was lined up perfect.
The truck was due for an alignment, so I figured I would get that done to get maximum life out of my new tires. I have the lifetime from Firestone, so no biggie. Got my truck back and it pulled to the right, the steering wheel had to be cranked to the left to keep the truck driving in a straight line. I called and they said they must of forgot to align the steering wheel, and to bring it back.
I dropped the truck off at a different location due to where I was working that week, explained the issue, they said no problem, easy fix. Get my truck back, they say the camber is maxed and can’t be adjusted anymore, and it’s slightly out of spec. They said to compensate for that, the steering wheel can’t be aligned and I’ll feel a pull to the right. They said to fix this, I need an aftermarket adjustable camber nut. This doesn’t seem right to me. So now I’m driving down the road with the truck pulling to the right and my steering wheel cranked to the left. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Recently I have found Firestone to be completely worthless and unwilling to do any work on trucks. They used to be my go-to in years past, not any more.
Rims and tires have nothing to do with your alignment.
Steering wheel cocked to one side but “computer says it’s in spec and best I can do”. Garbage.
Go to a local shop and test test drive it before you actually leave. An alignment is not a yes it’s done or no it’s not it is to your satisfaction.
Your camber and caster numbers were good the first time around, they should have left that alone and just reset the toe and steering wheel. If you end up taking it in again they should able to get the camber/caster settings to what it was and have them set the total toe between 20* - 30*. This will help the truck track better..
I am not an alignment technician, but every resource available states a vehicle pulls toward the side of LEAST positive caster. You want the least positive caster on the driver's side to account for road crown. Your settings match with pulling right (road crown slopes toward edge and caster pulls to right (least positive)). Best or worst of both worlds.
