Default Muffler to tailpipe connection

2014 3.5 ecoboost.

My flex pipe is broken, and I'm replacing it with a walker 21144 muffler which includes this flex pipe. With this solution, I will have to re-use the existing tailpipe, can anyone help me figure out what I need to connect the OEM tailpipe to the walker muffler? I think the outlet on the walker is 2.75". I assume some sort of union, but not sure which. I will be clamping, not welding. Thanks!

Alternatively if anyone has a part number for replacing just the flex pipe piece I'm interested, but didn't have any luck figuring that out.

It would be cheaper and easier to take it to a muffler shop to weld a new flex piece in

That's a direct fit part so both parts should fit together if they were both new. The tail pipe typically goes over the stub on the end of the muffler. Sometimes the tailpipe fits inside the stub.

A used tail pipe may or may not be crushed or distorted from being previously clamped so it will take some tools and experience to get it to mate up with the new muffler, but sometimes you get lucky. You may need a new clamp.

You may find it difficult just get the tailpipe separated from the old muffler.

I would suggest trying to fit the parts together either on the truck or garage floor since it's got to come apart anyway. If you can't get it assembled take it to a shop.

for ease and durability…. I would second this opinion..

Clamps leak….. and beside, the shop has the necessary tooling to make any sort of adapter for mismatched tube diameters. Plus they have a lift, no need to be dragging your self in and out constantly.

Default Exhaust pipe adapter / connector

You can measure id/od on pipe ends and go to an auto parts store and find an adapter that will work. A sawzall works great for cutting the muffler off of the tail pipe, this will probably cost no more then 10-20$ and your time.

Thanks guys for all the advice, I was probably overthinking it. The normally "cheap" place in town wanted $1k to replace the muffler/flex/tailpipe, they thought the muffler was about rotted through too which makes sense. $250 after shipping/tax got me everything from rockauto and DIY install took an hour, simple plug and play.

Only thing I don't love is that the walker stuff has one less hanger, OEM had a hanger right at the flex pipe that is missing now.

Would you be able to post the part numbers from Rockauto. My muffler is gone and I was looking at doing a complete Catback replacement but I don't think it's necessary. I read reviews on the Walker 21144 as well and it appears to be a quality part and easy installation feature is the selling feature for me. How did you find the install? Thanks in advance.

It was 21144 and 54890 for my truck. I had replaced the intermediate pipe with resonator earlier this year. Install is pretty easy but you'll want a reciprocating saw and maybe an angle grinder with cutoff wheel if your stuff is rusted like mine. Once removed it will just bolt together.
