which MSRP the dealer use

Just came back from dealership, the salesman told me when they talk about MSRP, they always use that number "TOTAL BEFORE DISCOUNTS", not the "TOTAL MSRP", so in my case, the MSRP should be $65.970, not $63.970, is that right? first time buy a Ford, never heard that before, thanks in advance. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.f15...394dc087e.jpeg

Tell him you and Ford consider package discounts used in the calculation of the MSRP to be part of the MSRP. So they can use whatever they want but the Manufacturer Suggested Ridiculous Profit, is $63,970.00

I’d tell the sales person I don’t care what MSRP you use... I’m only paying invoice minus half the holdback minus all available rebates.

If they refuse to show you the invoice get up and walk out.

Growinupmx 11-08-2017 09:48 AM

Dealers are using that tactic to inflate the total (fake) discount they are giving on a truck

Kingofwylietx 11-08-2017 10:50 AM

MSRP = Total MSRP.

Using the total before discounts is as ludicrous as if you said you will use the total before options are added.

That dealer is trying to get you focused on a meaningless fight, it's a sales tactic. Just work off of invoice or find a dealer that isn't trying to use those lame games.

Why undersell yourself? I'm gettin all that holdback!

Ricktwuhk 11-08-2017 02:52 PM

It's irrelevant as stated, since you don't buy based off a discount off MSRP. You buy based on money - how much they want out of your pocket - and that should be figured out from invoice, less rebates. Whether you can successfully get back some or all of holdback (3% of FULL MSRP) is up for discussion.

I would strongly suggest you Google X-Plan and join an organization with it, you're outmatched if this has you confused.

Where forum member "toptobottom" to explain this? LOL

gregsf150stx 11-08-2017 03:40 PM

Dealers also like to advertise "package discounts" in their "TOTAL VALUE" in savings.

acdii 11-08-2017 05:14 PM

What would be nice is to find actual invoice pricing.

todd92 11-08-2017 06:19 PM

Use MSRP for what? What does MSRP have to do with anything?

Agree...invoice pricing (as close as you could get) went away almost 20 years ago when the internet became common place in households. Manufacturers had to disclose "Manufacturer to Dealer" incentives. The manufacturers shuffled the deck, renamed "manufacturer to dealer" rebates as volume sales, quarterly sales incentives and a host of other names to hide the real profit.

This.^^^

Depending on what incentives are offered at what time, dealers seem to fluctuate between the two to show a bigger discount.

gregsf150stx 11-08-2017 08:25 PM

Like some of the dealers around here say "SAVE UP TO 10,000" on a New F150 XLT Crew Eco.

they're using invoice, (maybe some holdback), rebates, and using that package discount ALREADY in the price to make it seem like a TOTALLY great deal!.

Package discount typically around 2,000 on a higher trim level (seen it on STX as well).
So, that GREAT deal is only about 8,000.

Dealers advertise using the high MSRP for multiple reasons. One of the biggest reasons is Ford Credit looks at the high MSRP when it comes to financing and leases. The more package discount listed on a window sticker or invoice, the better the lease will be. For instance, an XLT 302a with nav has a lower monthly lease payment than the EXACT same truck without nav. The $500 nav package discount helps this. Also, the invoice does not reflect the full $2,000/2,500 package discount, etc.

As many have posted, you are not buying based off MSRP anyhow. Everything is based off Invoice. Not many dealers will give you all of holdback, but many will give you all but a few hundred bucks of it.

Okay, I have a question for you folks. According to a recent advertisement, the Ford dealer close to me is offering up to $15,000 off MSRP. Even considering how much the prices can be inflated, would a straight 15K off a truck with a MSRP of $56,190 be a decent deal? I realize the pic doesn't reflect 15k in discounts but wanted to ask based on their radio advertisement.

It's a 2017 SCREW 4X4 with 501A, 2.7L EB, FX4 Off Road package and a few other items.

What are your thoughts?

The discount off of MSRP means nothing. The only thing that matter is what you are paying. A good starting point is invoice less holdback. Then you have to make sure you aren't getting processing, advertising, marketing and whatever other BS the dealer conjures up, which are just adding back to his bottom line. Dealers in VA and MD are even allowed to advertise prices that don't include freight and than add that back in.

If the dealer is offering 15K off of a Lariat and that is the actual bottom line before TT&L, it's a steal. Good luck.

Thanks for the info.

I have a day off tomorrow so I'll probably stop by and see what the dealer can do. I'm in no rush to buy so if they cant get to a price I like I can easily walk.

We'll see what happens

They're not... You won't qualify for some, you won't have a trade, etc.

I would be very cautious. Ask for the invoice...

I think you will find your not qualified for most of those rebates. Normally they for military members, present and past people who have leased from Ford and members for goverment such as Police and college students for example.
There is such a narrow window of who would qualify for all of the rebates, and Ford know that too. It just sounds good to advertize $15,000 in rebates.

JBhunter45 11-10-2017 11:34 AM

What todd92 said. $15k off is their hook to get you to the dealership.
Make sure they start with the blue box MSRP from the window sticker.
You probably wont qualify for all of the Ford incentives/rebates either.
