Knocking noise from moonroof
#581
I had the TSB done about three weeks ago now. Still seems to have worked. Only a slight knock every now and then and only when I hit a really big bump. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Well mine has been at the dealer since 7am today for 3 things. Moonroof rattle at all time, transmission shifts are harsh and Sync system is blacking out or putting colorful lines across the screen 50% of the time I start the truck. Just called to check in before they close at 7pm and was told they have only touched the moonroof and they dont expect to be done with that until end of day tomorrow. I really hope the 2 days they are spending working on this moonroof takes care of the problem.
I have owned 6 different F-series trucks and NONE of them have ever been to the shop 3 times let alone have 3 different problems at once.

I gotta send out a big shout out to the helpful folks on this forum!
Once again, y'all saved me a bunch of time and frustration
I downloaded the creaky moonroof TSB yesterday, printed it out, took it home, and viola! no more noise!
Took me maybe 20 minutes to do, and this morning, no creaking. I used Shinetsu grease I had laying around from when I owned a Honda (it was recommended for their sunroofs), and the isopropyl alcohol was in the wife's medicine cabinet, lol.
So glad I didn't have to make a visit to the dealership (new job + new baby = no time)
Thanks!

Brought in my Lariat 6 months ago for the moonroof TSB, fix lasted about two months before the creaking came back. It is now so bad I can only crack it to the venting position, I am not able to retract the glass panel. Brought it in to the dealer today and they said it would cost me $120 to grease the moonroof again because at 40k miles I am out of warranty. This was after it took them an hour and a half to change my oil - pretty disappointed in Ford at this point....
So everyone that thinks this is just a noise problem... it won't be. The glass panels are slowly separating from the frames and shifting. I have an appointment to have mine looked at again next week.
A year and a half trying to work this to a real repair through the warranty.

Got mine back yesterday. Was at the dealer for 4 days and still not fixed. Tech claimed he could not hear the constant tapping out of the moonroof. Talked with the Service Manager who drove it and heard it immediately. They ordered what he called the "rattle kit" which I am assuming is some rubberized tape to deaden the noise. So now I will be without my truck once again to get this done. Very frustrating when you have to jump through hoops to have a warranty issue taken care of on a $50K+ vehicle.

Guys, the permanent fix to this is to have your dealer replace the whole front glass panel. As Airborne_Ape discovered a couple of pages ago in this thread, the noise is most often coming from where the glass panel is bonded into the metal frame. The adhesive is cracked which causes the noise when the truck flexes over bumps. The noise should be easy to reproduce by pushing up on the frame with your hand on the side that's making the noise, as Airborne_Ape demonstrated in his video (mine was on the passenger side of the panel, drivers side was silent, so opposite of what Airborne_Ape was experiencing). It sure sounds like the glass panels are rattling together, but it's not.
I referenced this thread to my dealer and the investigative work that Airborne_Ape and his dealer did, and they had Ford approve a front panel replacement. The sound is completely gone now.
You guys should be pushing your dealers to replace the glass panel. The track, rear panel, drain tubes, and all other components of the moonroof remain untouched to do this, as this isn't where the issue is. So no worries about introducing leaks or other issues by having the panel replaced. Dealer told me that it was only 6 bolts to swap out the panel. They had me in and out of there in 45 minutes.
Now the question is, will the adhesive in this new panel also crack at some point, bringing the sound back. The sound for me didn't start until around 15,000 kms on the original panel, so I'm assuming that's when the adhesive started cracking. So, will it happen again eventually, who knows???

Understood. Maybe Ford Canada is easier to deal with? I had no issues at all getting approved for a panel replacement. My dealer is great though, which I'm sure plays a big part.

Just yesterday my moonroof has now become inoperative like yours. It's been rattling progressively worse and now I can only crack it to the venting position. I cannot retract the panel to normal open.
So everyone that thinks this is just a noise problem... it won't be. The glass panels are slowly separating from the frames and shifting. I have an appointment to have mine looked at again next week.
