Job book hours to swap rear end clutch pack
Got a buddy who has an '04 F150 and the rear end clutch pack is going bad. I'm trying to help him as neither of us have ever done a job like that before. Dealership quoted him $900-1000. I'm wondering what the job book quotes the labor cause the parts are $200. It would be almost better to buy a complete rear end and swap it out as they are fairly easy to come by.

And just to add rear end rebuilts/setups with clutches are a HUGE PITA.
I'd GLADLY pay $800 to have it done/warranty/etc.

Huge pita?? Its a cake walk and you would have to be on drugs to pay someone any sort of money to do that job. Unless you simply don't have the time or the tools. Op if you have any questions let me know.

Someone who actually knows how to do it though (such as yourself) could probably school some folks.

For us it isn't a question of tools or time. Although no expert or professional I think with two of us we could get this done as long as there are no surprises after tearing it down.

Had the clutch packs replaced twice under warranty in my '03 Expy. The paperwork shows a cost of $1045.65. They have been good for over 125K miles since then - glad I didn't have to do the job or pay for it...

Swapped a 2.73 open rear for a 3.55 trac lock in a grand marquis, should be the same 8.8 rear. If you're just replacing clutch packs the labor is probably the same. I paid I think $550-600 to have it all done.

There should be no messing with the ring and pinion setup, but of course it's very important to keep track of the carrier shims left and right side, mixing these up will of course result in major problems.
