Issues with new Ridge Grappler balance and Discount Tire
Hey all wanted to pass this by you all to see what you think
i have a 2019 raptor- I recently got a new set of tires - ridge grapplers 315/70/17 installed i have had slight wheel shimmy and some vibration at highway speed since. I have had them road forced by discount three times now (not counting the original balance when installed- it seems that the first discount was balancing them and then giving them to be out of balance as I would go back and they would have bad run outs the second discount tire I took it to did another roadforce and surprise- out of balance again. this balance was a lot better- but im still get slight wheel shimmy and vibrations. it also seems that there are a TON of weights on the wheels right front 7oz Right back 8oz Left front 7.5oz left back 6.5oz the weights are in two spots and stacked. Tires have been rotated on the rim as well. I am using the same rims and had no issues with them before the new tires does this weight seem reasonable to you? |
yea for big tires i wouldnt sweat that too much, is it a little excessive yes but not terrible, if that doesn't fix it i recommend balance beads

Are the weights opposing or 180 degrees apart?

what is weird is that some weights are on the outer lip near the spokes but the majority of the stacked weights are on the interior edge near the caliper. Never seen that before. |

Have Firestone Roadforce balance them. If they fix it, you can get Discount to pay you back for taking it to Firestone.
that’s why I decided to take it to a different store |
Im a manager at Discount tire. what are the road force numbers? Anything over 35 and we "turn" the tire to eliminate that certain high spot. having a lower road force will also help with the amount of weight needed.

unfortunately I have never been able to talk the tech when picking up the truck. I always just had the desk people who were just reading notes off the receipt The second time the receipt said “bad run outs left side”. the third time they said all tires were out of balance at https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.f15...ec8c20f59.jpeg Attached was my back left tire the second time they gave it back |
Do you have white, yellow or red dots on the new tires? I am not aware of an industry standard, but most tire shops will replace a LT tire with a road force value over 30 lbs. and 25 lbs. on a P rated tire. In general, you start by aligning the red dot on the sidewall with the white or dimple stamped on the back side of the wheel. If the white dot or dimple is not present, the yellow dot aligned with the valve stem. It is a good starting point, but the Hunter 9700 has the ability to refine the placement, but it is rare to see a tire technician pay any attention. It is quicker to mount the wheel and stick-on weights until they run out of room on the wheel.

with the balancers we use, it corrects everything for us. Where are you located? and honestly, if you were at my store, we would have just ordered another set for you already or maybe try a different tire all together.
