Its all electronically, the circuit resets itself if the problem is removed. Everything in these newer trucks are controlled this way.

The wires go through holes at the top of the bed side, near the tailgate.

Awesome, this mod just might be cheap enough to get the wife on board now .

So now that I know that I can do it, does anybody have the wiring diagram for the OEM harness so I know which wires to splice into?

If you go right to the bed lights its only two wires. According to the wiring book, which is a great investment, the positive wire is Green with a Blue stripe. The negative is Black with a Yellow stripe

Alright so I was started wiring everything up today but my lights didn't get here on time from amazon so I'll be finishing it up tomorrow. I'll post pictures of everything tomorrow once it's all done. But Gordy was correct, green/blue is positive, negative is black/yellow. The harness is kind of a pain to get to but there is a hole in the bed near the tailgate that is perfect for running the wires to the light strip.

Got the install finished, ended up being pretty easy, took about 15-20 minutes each side since I already had the wires spliced into the factory lights. I accidentally no bought the non waterproof light strip from amazon but where the lights are I don't see it really being a problem. I left enough slack to rewire it so I might order the waterproof ones and redo it sometime.

Blue/Green is positive, Black/Yellow is negative

Looks good! This is one of those upgrades that is inexpensive, easy, and useful. I use mine all the time. Even mid-day, the back of the bed is dim...not anymore.

Glad it all worked, nice job, I'll have to look at doing that. I have a tool box down the right side, so may run a strip on the tonneau cover over the box.
