It's not the shift linkage. He is experiencing the rattle from the wastegate linkage to the vacuum actuator. It is a known issue with the Ecoboost engines.

Is there an at home fix for this? I believe I'm having the same rattle but out of warranty due to mileage.

Wondering about this also. Worst case the dealer can do the fix for a couple hundred bucks I would think no?
