How-To Install- OEM Tailgate damper "tailgate assist" for 2015/2016
This was a quick and easy install but I figured I would post up pics and instructions since the ones included were about as good as "Ikea" (pictures only) instructions. I had my 14 and 9 year old boys fighting over who was going to help me with each step. They both helped and are ready to do something else on the truck.
The only things you will need is -
-2015/16 Ford F150 Truck Tailgate Damper w/Hinge Ford FL3Z-99406A10-A (this is the part I used- their may be another part number out there like this one that will work also)
-T50 Torx bit with ratchet
-8mm socket
-flathead screwdriver
-blanket or towel (to place tailgate on after removal)
- extra set of hands to assist with tailgate removal
-bubble wrap (for the tail light bulbs)
1. unplug rearview camera located under bed between spare tire and bumper
2. remove tailgate safety cables - slide flathead screwdriver under clip and move cable forward/up to remove
3. remove tailgate - open and set to 2 o'clock position - you need to be on passenger side and look at hinge - when you rotate it to proper position it can be pulled out towards you - have a friend on the drivers side to assist with tailgate - slide out of passenger hinge and place tailgate "paint side up" on a blanket or soft towels
4. unscrew 2 8mm screws to release taillight - once removed pull backwards away from truck bed - 3 plastic pins are helping hold the taillight in -you may want to remove bulb housings from light then wrap them up and tuck in taillight housing to get out of the way and place taillight out of the way so it will not be scratched or damage the side of the truck
5. unscrew 2 t50 bolt on old tailgate housing
6. remove old hinge and insert the new hinge with silver part with ball going inside tailgate housing - line up the 2 t50 bolts and tighten the new hinge (instructions said you can paint the hinge but it is black and in the inside of tailgate is not really noticeable)
7. install new shock on lower silver ball (looks like a mini trailer ball hitch) and upper ball attached to truck bed - push in to secure it
8. reinstall tailgate and test - it should lower slowly now instead of slamming down
9. reinstall taillight bulb housing and taillight
10. plug the backup camera back up
11. put up your tools and close tailgate
