Default Hole in tailgate - plug missing?

I noticed this hole in my tailgate. Almost looks like a plug is missing... ?

If not I'll have to find or make a plug. Seems like dirt and debris would get in there when hauling something with the tailgate down (like a snowmobile or couple of dirtbikes).

PS - this is a plain tailgate - no integrated step.

Probably just vents to let the moisture out. I have the same hole(s).

Edit: Or maybe it's a spot to fit a screw driver that would allow removing the handle or something. Seriously, I have no clue but I do have the same hole (or maybe two)

It's for the retention rod of the bed extender.

Default Extender

The hole is for the rod on the bed extender to lock down into.

LineX sprayed over mine, which I like. He told me it was for the bed extender and just clean it out if I get one.

I sure am glad you posted this and someone answered. I was gonna go raise with the shop that did my spray in bed liner. Thanks to all, you saved me from looking foolish! At least this time!!
