I have been looking at my 18, as Im going to run a few cables myself and the place I see the easiest is where the steering wheel shaft comes thru the firewall--its a soft rubber boot, just put a small slice in the rubber and when done you can always RTV the small hole you made--should be no issues. I have not done it yet but thats my plan....

That boot has several layers...it’s nowhere near as simple as it sounds.
I drilled a hole just below the steering shaft and used a grommet...super simple and clean.
on my 16 I found it not easy to go thru the passenger side until I pulled the passenger wheel well liner out.. then it is easy, made for a cleaner install least for #4 wire... if your looking to wire an amp, in a regular cab tap the seat belt frame bolt for the ground wire.
No need to cut anything other than a couple zip ties. The factory boot near the steering shaft will allow you to pull through some wires. Just clip the zip ties, i think i used a heavy duty zip tie to push though and pull my wires back. Some dielectric grease helped a lot too. Aftee youre done, just put some new ties on the ends of the boot. If you're neesing to run large gauge wires, it might not work. I ran 4 14 gauge wires for some switches without trouble.

While this may be true....to pass smaller ga wire...the photo above shared by UNBROKEN is the preferred and best way to pass larger ga wire such as power wire for amplifiers etc. Drilling a hole directly thru that nipple, there is zero risk to damaging any wires at all inside the boot.

No doubt this is the side I need to run this cable into the cabin. How worried should I be that I'll hit a cable in this grommet? Because I can't see it inside the cabin makes me a little nervous.
