Default Help with new purchase

I'm coming from a 05 lariat so a lot of these new features are new to me. I'm wanting maybe a 15' or 16' f150, 4wd and ecoboost 3.5. My question is I'm looking to spend a round 45k$. Living in the Houston area. There seems to be sooo many different packages now and days, FX4, Latiat, platinum, platinum and FX4, lariat and FX4. Can anyone shed some lights on what comes on some of these 15' and 16' trucks that I should look out for or stay away from, thanks for the help

Best thing you can do is go the ford website and build your own and add and remove packages to see what you get with each. Then go to a dealer to see it in person.

Are the packages for the 15' 16' the same as the 17'? I'd assume you'd be building a 17' online

I also came from an 05 XLT. These trucks will blow you away. So lets get started.

Go Online and build what the website is building that day. I you want start with a Lariat. Check out the packages 500A, 501A, 502A, The tech package, sport and chrome packages. Then compare with XLT, Platinum, King Ranch. My guess with a 45K budget your looking at XLT or Lariat. You can right click the packages and it will tell you all the stuff that comes in the package. Also some option are not available in all colors or trim levels. For 45K get as familiar with everything before coming here and asking what to get with a blank slate. Around here you'll get a thousand different answers. Find what your interested in... then ask...hope that helps. And then order what you want.

My first question to you is how do you use you truck? Do you pull a trailer, is payload an issue? If so, get the heavy duty payload package. This will limit some of the options and trim levels.

If not, then play around with the build your own on ford.com (.ca for Canada)

Have fun, it sure was for me.

As suggested, use the Ford website to build your desired truck. After doing that, I suggest going to TrueCar.com or other online car buying service to get the best deal. I've heard Costco is pretty good too.

No some of the packages and option requirements have changed for 2017

For example:

  • The Max Trailer Tow Pkg (only available w/3.5L Ecoboost) for 2017 now includes the 36 gal fuel tank. However if you're not smart about ordering, you can still purchase the std. Trailer Tow Pkg, 36 gal tank, 3.55 gear ratio and Integrated Trailer Brake Controller as ala carte packages & options and end up paying significantly more than ordering the Max Trailer Tow Pkg.
  • In the XLT trim level, the BLIS option now requires the purchase of LED Mirror Spotlamps - new requirement for 2017
  • The Electronic 10 Speed transmission is now "Standard" with the 3.5L Ecoboost. However what they don't tell you, unless you read the price guide very carefully, is that the Electronic 10 Speed Transmission is a $500 (@ MSRP) option that isn't "Included" in cost of the 3.5L Ecoboost engine upgrade.
Unfortunately most (not all) Dealer's Sales Teams aren't up to speed and educated on how to most cost effectively spec/order a vehicle. You could inadvertently end up paying hundreds or thousands of $$$s more for the same vehicle simply by not spec'ing smartly.

Choose wisely !!

Download the F-150 manual from the Ford site and read it. Explains many of the options, packages.

I got a 16 XLT SCREW 5.0 4x4 with Towing and the backup camera package (no nav) sticker was 50, I got it for 44K after rebates. Pays to go shop around and just let them know what you want...

Don't let the MSRP numbers scare you away from a truck you might be interested in - you can probably buy a whole lot more truck than you think for $45K. On the other hand, you can probably buy a $45K truck in the upper $30K range if you aren't interested in a highly optioned truck. Right now and through the fall is a good time to start shopping for a '16 model if you can find one on the lot that you like - they SHOULD be willing to wheel & deal to get rid of their old stock in anticipation of the '17s that will be rolling in shortly.

I bought a new truck almost 3 months ago from Holiday Ford in Whitesboro, TX and was very impressed with the whole buying process. I bought a $62K truck for $52K - I might could have done some more negotiating and got them down more but I was satisfied with the deal I received. That was THEIR price to me - I did no haggling at all. You might consider at least getting a price from them while doing research - there should be one of the bigger dealerships around Houston that could match or beat Holiday's prices. Planet Ford in Spring was about the biggest F150 dealer in the country at one time.

Good luck!
