Goodyear Wrangler Fortitude tires = pretty bad in snow

Are you sure about 45 inches? Where I live in Maine it's about 77 inches and a couple hours north of here, where I go snowmobiling, it's about 120 inches per year. That's why i just got some winter tires.

Never made it home from the dealer with the good year junks on my truck--dealer gave me $150 a tire for a trade and put on a set of cooper st maxx's (cost $400 after trade). They are awesome in the snow -- studable if you want and when compared to the what many on the forum consider the "best winter tire" (goodyear durateks) the ST's are cheaper, same snow traction capability and you do not have to worry about the cheesy sidewalls on the durateks. A 2 ply sidewall is just too cheesy for use off road in the rocks.

Studded winters are for AWD cars and SUV's. Duratracs are a legit snow tire. Most treads on marketed 'winter' tires are not capable of evacuating snow and are only designed to aid stopping on ice. I've seen more 4x4 trucks stuck in a snowbank with blizzak or altimax than I care to remember. Duratracs are great. I have Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo2's and they are the best snow tire I have ever used.
I will say though that I do love me some Duratracs, i put them on my 85 F250 before they started getting popular and loved them.

Sure yeah if you get a ton of ice then stud away. But most people seem to talk about snow when considering winter tires. All the dedicated winters i have seen on pickups have been incapable of evacuating snow so are pretty useless in my mind. That said I have been driving on ice roads in the arctic for the past 7 years and my Duelers have been fantastic! Lots of duratracs here as well. Only the taxis in town are studded even with 8mo of winter.

The Duelers last better as well. 4yrs 50000 km on mine when I bought new ones and they still had 30% left. Virtually all gravel/ice/snow mileage. Five trips up and down the dempster highway not one flat.
