My brakes have gone out like 4 times due to some things I was doing...anyways to drive to the dealer to get new hoses stop the leaks I had to drive an hour down big hills to get there. I locked out all gears but 1st and 2nd on them, while it didn't slow me down to 20 mphs it did keep me from going 60+ down them and let me feel some what under control.

So while it doesn't work as well as my focus st in 3rd down a hill, it does work a little.

Use sport or tow mode if you want the truck to slow down when you take your foot off the gas. The normal mode is gear towards fuel economy so the truck will let the momentum carry the speed, so at times this will feel like it's speeding up rather then slowing down.

I cant believe people comment without reading original posts.
WTF

I HAVE TRIED SPORT MODE
I HAVE TRIED TOW/HAUL MODE

AND MY FOOT IS NOT ON THE GAS SILLY....

What im concerned with here is having to brake often & harder than i would like on icy snowy hills is a accident waiting to happen, not the best situation thats for sure.

With the cruise control on my truck seems to hold speed quite well when going down hill, but I don't know what method it uses to do it; engine, trans or brakes? Almost feels like it does it with the engine somehow.

While this is true, however as soon as the brakes are tapped CC would deactivate. Then OP is back to square one.

It's a heavy truck. Engine braking alone isn't going to slow it down like it would a Subaru.

If you want/need true engine braking, then you need to get a Super Duty.

Unless you're towing or hauling a heavy load, brake fade shouldn't be a problem. You get better control using the brakes and you aren't sucking oil all the way down the hill either.

I live in the same type of area and I use Sport mode almost exclusively. Whenever I take my foot off the gas it will rev-match and shift down. Going down a long hill to the ferry terminal it controls the speed quite well, with CC; not in Sport mode I get going way too fast. In both modes I do need to brake nearing the bottom.

You might try trip to the dealer? Some on here are getting their transmissions flashed for other issues, maybe it will help yours too?

Engine braking only affects the rear axle unless you're in 4 wheel drive. The brake pedal applies all four wheels and is far safer in ice and snow. Engine braking on ice is a good way to end up pointing north in a southbound truck.

Is that an fx4 in your avatar? I can't tell but I'm pretty sure the hdc only come standard on the fx4 package.

It works very well on my truck, and with my rough exhaust it is very noticeable when it kicks in as the tone of the exhaust changes completely. I have tried it on quite a steep hill and it definetly slowed me down without issue and without being on the brakes. I've also heard it working above the 25mph mark, which is 40kmh, on this specifics hill I watched my speed decrease from 45kmh as I was descending, and the exhaust sounded like a jake brake.

Let's verify if you actually have hdc and if it's actually working. Manually downshifting a transmission to slow a vehicle down like a manual is a sure way to cause transmission failure, I didn't know that until I was doing that as well on a previous vehicle and the transmission failed completely and would only slip instead of go anywhere.

Edit* I see your signature now that your truck is an fx4, but again lets make sure it's actually working.
