Default Gear indicator on the dash - on/off?

I'm a week into ownership of my 2016 Lariat and for the first few days, I noticed that the spot on the dash beside the tachometer where the transmission gears are show was black (nothing showing). I thought maybe it only came on if you were in Manual mode.

I've been playing with alot of settings lately and now the gears indicator is showing up permantently. Is there an on/off setting for this "feature" that I may have turned on?

Thanks! I find myself sliding my thumb mindlessly around that button all the time so I must have pressed it inadvertently.

As an aside, I wish I could change the function of that button to be "skip song"...

The buttons to skip a song, are by the volume buttons on the SW.

Ya but they are on the "wrong side" for a guy who tends to drive with his left hand on the wheel and his right hand on the shifter.

In my old car and on my wife's current car, the volume/skip buttons were/are on the left of the steering wheel and I miss them so much! Having to lift my right hand from the shifter to the steering wheel or touchscreen to skip a song is just too much. TOO MUCH!

I wonder if it's too late to trade this thing back for my 2010 Mazda 3?

Resting hand on the shifter is a habit you should try to avoid, it's fine in auto trans cars but resting it on a stick car or truck generates excessive wear.

It's an automatic (can you even get the current gen F150 in manual?) but I'm coming off years of driving standard so I can't quite shake the habit yet.

You really should read your owner manual..........you'll be amazed about all the features your truck has.
