FordPass SmartLink
If you bought the device outright, then you just call Ford directly and tell them you are a non-dealer “technician” who knows how to program Ford keys and that your particular vehicle make/model is exempted from requiring IDS programming, and that you wish to do it yourself. Most dealers aren’t even enrolled or “trained” to install this device, so how much longer do you think it would take you to get on their learning curve to do it yourself? Insist to speak with highest person on the pecking order at Ford Corporate and tell em you can’t justify cost and risk of having it installed at a dealership. Threaten to return the device, etc. All corporate wants from you is to buy the damn device, and be happy with it. If they can convince you to take it to a dealership only to extract more money outta your wallet, then all power to them! But you must assure them you will assume all risks & responsibility having to do with the installation. If it somehow fails to activate, the worst that can happen is that you return the device for full refund. The backchannel communication helps, they will create an account for you, at which point you are on your own get the device paired and programmed directly from your vehicle. It took less than 20 minutes, including relocating/hiding device deep under the dash with an OBD splitter that retains the original port available for future access. If I recall correctly, these are the only make/models that require IDS programming, thus dealer installation, only IF you don’t have/know ForScan:
- 2016 and 2017 Explorer
- 2011 thru 2017 Fiesta (push button start)
- 2012 thru 2017 Flex
- 2015 thru 2017 F150
- 2014 thru 2017 Fusion
- 2015 and 2017 MKX
- 2015 thru 2017 Mustang

That depends entirely on whom you speak with! If you call Corporate hotline for Smartlink, then yes, you’ll get such an oblivious response. I guess it’s all about who you know, or how persistent and persuasive you happen to be, when it’s all said and done. I had no issues as did a few of my engineer buddies who convinced the right people to bypass dealership requirements for install. We are all grateful for having saved 50% off of the total cost of ownership - $200-300 bucks for labor alone (depending on where you live), not including the $40 useless “relocation kit” and $17/mo subscription fee on a 2 year contract! Even still, I personally don’t find Smartlink to be the most cost-effective solution for any CONVE project (connected vehicle). Keep an eye out for nextGen hum devices by Verizon - 5G/WiFi/RC and better GUI - that will likely cost no more than $100 total with no contract.

This very topic has been driving me crazy. I have an '18 XLT with SYNC 3, but no wireless data modem, so I cannot use remote features from FordPass. It does not appear that this specific part is available anywhere.
Do you think this would work?
Ford Part Number: VHL3Z-14F642-A
