Default First Oil Change

Had my first oil change yesterday. Got "The Works" done to my truck. Consisted of oil and filter change, multi point inspection (whatever that is), tire rotation and a wash. Normally costs $40, but being fist time and other discounts, I wound up paying .92 cents

On other vehicles I have owned, I would normally change oil around 5k miles. But in my f150, I was told by the service department and others to just wait for the oil life warning message to indicate when to change the oil. That happened around 9800 miles. Does that sound about right? Seems a long time...

Thoughts?

*EDIT*
I found this link from ford on the oil change life:
http://owner.ford.com/how-tos/vehicl...te-MFPR0515OIL

Oh, I finally figured out the signature thing in my f150 profile...

You went 9,800 miles on your first oil change? WOW!!! I would've changed it no later than 3-4,000 miles. I had my first oil change done yesterday at 2,000 miles. Now I'll do it every 5,000 miles. I don't follow the oil life indicator.

My first was yesterday (3700). I will be following Fords recommendations from here on out. I figure they designed the engine so they know a little more than me about it. Less cost, less waste.

9,800 isn't a problem. We went 10k on my wife's new Mercedes as stated in the manual and my sister went 12k on her new car as indicated by the computer. I'm at 3k now on my truck and will probably change it at 5k the first time due to a little spirited driving.

My first and second were at 5000 mile intervals. At 10000 miles I switched to Amsoil and will stay with that brand. Previous vehicles served us well using Amsoil and we have hopes this one will do the same. As for when my next change will be I will be watching the computer and play it by ear but I think 7500 miles is very reasonable.

My manual pg 502 has a table of when to expect the oil change prompt, apparently calculated basis driving conditions seen by the computer. "Normal" conditions at 7500 - 10000 miles, "Severe" conditions at 5000 - 7499 miles, "Extreme" conditions at 3000 - 4999 miles. The differences of conditions include "Normal" at no / moderate load or towing, flat to moderate hills at one end and "Extreme" at the other end being maximum load or towing or extreme hot or cold operation (presumably considerable amounts). In the middle (Severe) includes moderate to heavy load / towing, mountainous or off-road, or extended hot or cold conditions.

I plan to go to full synthetic oil and do my first change at 1000 miles, then 5000 after that. My conditions will be "normal" so I'll never see the alert. My wife's Buick shows a % left, and it would extrapolate to 10000 - 12000 miles on conventional oil. use synthetic and change it at 5000.

That's crazy for your first oil change, the most important oil change for the vehicle. Each to their own. IMO!

I used to change my oil every 3,000 miles, then I adopted the 5,000 mile suggestion. However when I had a 2007 GMC I waited until the indicator recommendation, which was usually around 10,000 miles. I never keep a truck longer than 3 years so I'm going trust the indicator because I probably won't own this truck beyond the extended warranty.
I doubt changing the oil proactively as opposed to when the oil monitoring system suggests will make a difference unless you plan to drive the truck 200-300k miles.

Just my two cents.....save the money, save the planet.

AMSOIL preaches how it can go 12k or one year. Unless you're towing regularly or lots of off road use why waste the crazy price of amsoil at 7500? I use it in my supercharged 5.0, but that's a track car with lots of spirited driving.

Not that you live in a super cold place, but watch this and you may want to use Mobil1 instead of Amsoil. My vehicles see nothing but Mobil1.
