These are not your dad's engines, the Ford engineers themselves recommend you to follow the IOLM system. My last vehicle the Ford service department tried to tell me the people that designed the engine didnt know what they were talking about so I sent Ford an email and got a response that Ford Corp recommends and stands behind their IOLM system and as long as you follow the recommendations in the owners manual using the IOLM you will not have an issue.

This also saves on the environment of wasted oil changes. My last Ford vehicle I did an oil change every 10k miles as it would reach 10k before even 20% oil life hit and less then a year. Zero problems.

You can't tell me billion dollar fleet management companies like PHH/Element, Enterprise, ARI, etc are "Suckers" for 5k interval oil changes.
Funny you should bring that up, my company has a fleet of over 5,000 vehicles (Mostly Fords but some other brands) and that is just our Fleet, the company we use to maintain our fleet also manages other companies fleets and they have a hard set 7,500 mile oil change policy for all vehicles they manage and we put at least 100k miles on our vehicles before they are sold off.

I never heard of an engine failure in our fleet. Keep in mind that we drive these hard: long idle times, abnormal amount of on/off, heavy start/stop in traffic, start cold and go, lowest price gas available, quick accelerations, etc... basically worse driving habits you can imagine.

Lol, this thread made me laugh!

Oil analysis for a DD, throwing money away because "I did oil changes at 3K on my Grand Torino so I'll do them on my 2015", and just the Neanderthal way of thinking!

I'm surprised any of you drive a modern vehicle with your distrust in the engineers!

Do you guys still use rocks to bang off the drain plus and use leaves as a catch?

Sheesh............

I've done 7500 or when the oil minder tells me in my truck and she purrs like a kitten, stock batch oil from dealer as I have a service contract! 66k on the odo.

Wife's Flex, same deal and she has 118k odo and once again, sings right along!

The summary of this thread is: Different strokes for different folks - choices are what makes America and this forum great. We can choose what we feel is best for our vehicles. Coming from the high performance world - I just had my first oil change at 500 miles. Overkill maybe, but I prefer the glitter and break-in metals out sooner than later - my money, my choice. These first 500 miles have also been with a whole lot of variable speeds loading and unloading the engine. My next at 3000 and 5,000 after that. It's a choice that works and has never failed me with the demands I put on my "fleet". Oil is cheap, engines not so much. That said, I am more than good with anyone's else's risk vs reward choices on oil changes.

I did oil change at about 1500k no UOA. I believe it a good idea to get the break in metals out of the engine. I will change 5k later at about 6500k and do a UOA. Then on to a 7500k and see what I get.

I'm a fan of a first early oil change on a new vehicle; though there's no proof it helps, our engines were designed for fresh oil so it certainly won't hurt. As said earlier, oil is cheap and engines aren't.

For later on, everyone's driving style is different, and that's where a UOA (Used Oil Analysis) comes in. Add in everyone's preference for short or long intervals and we have the debate that's been going on. I plan to hold on to my vehicles so want to make sure the oil is good throughout the oil change, but don't want to waste money changing too often. But folks that keep their vehicles for a couple/three years and trade in might not care as much about the potential for accelerated wear from keeping the oil in too long.

For myself, I use Amsoil and extend my interval to see how far the oil can go, then knock off about 10-15% of that distance so I never have to worry. If the oil is in good condition and still doing its job, it doesn't matter if it is changed every 3k or every 12k.

I've spent lots of time on bobistheoilguy.com, and learned a lot. One guy on there does 10000 mile oil changes with Mobil 1, and has since the 70s. Some guys change at 5000.

edit: Nissans: They have a smaller capacity sump compared to other brands, so have a shorter interval since the contaminants get concentrated more quickly.

Hopefully that all made sense...

When I got my new 2013 Screw 4 x 4 with 5.0 engine. First oil change at 500 next oil change at 1500 and the third oil change at 3000. I change it at 3000 miles now and I have 22,000 miles on it. I use the synthetic blend from Motorcraft and Motorcraft filter. That's just my personal preference. No issues no problems I'll probably keep this truck for a least 10 years.

The way I see it is that oil tech has advanced along with motor manufacture and technology so these linger intervals are not bad.

If we were using the same oil types we used 20 years ago then sure, it breaks down faster and needs to be changed more often.

To each their own I guess, I run the manual intervals on all my combustion engines and they are all fine as are the ones in that past. The only one I did more often was my Honda CRF-X as I raced it and it was run hard!

I even ran regular ole Dino oil in my Harley for 7 years with no issues.

If we were talking performance cars here I could understand the oil analysis and frequent changes as there are tighter tolerances but as mentioned these are just trucks.

Gentlemen,
You are welcome to attack another member's premise posed, but not the member. If you reduce yourself to attacking the member rather that his premise (or statement), It implies by default..."You got nothin!"

This is a place to discuss, not insult. There is always a mix of personal opinions (what has worked well for me) & more fact based (which is not w/o suspect, based on source). Drink it all in. Weigh the the opinions & facts (& the source based on) & go from there.

Now, this being said, the Thread will continue (& I am subscribed to the Thread).
