Default F-150 Check Engine Light - Need help diagnosing the problem

Hey everyone,

I'm hoping someone can help me out with an issue I'm having with my 2017 Ford F-150. Recently, the check engine light has come on, and I'm not sure what's causing the problem.

I've noticed that the engine seems to be running a bit rougher than usual, and there's a slight loss of power. I've tried checking the gas cap to make sure it's tight, but that doesn't seem to be the problem.

I'm not very experienced with car repairs, so I'm not sure where to start with diagnosing the issue. Has anyone else had a similar problem with their F-150? Any advice on how to troubleshoot and fix the issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help!

If not experienced, then plugging in an OBD2 reader probably won't help you fix it. The code is often triggered by multiple causes that have to be investigated further to isolate actual cause. Gas cap code takes multiple run cycles to self extinguish.

Mods please move to correct model year section.

Too many variables can set off check engine light. As you stated you checked the gas cap. Same can be said about the oil filler cap, air flow sensor, etc etc. Since you are not that experienced in the car repair field, I would recommend taking it to somebody or a shop of your choice. You can end up spending more money doing replace this and that while not finding or fixing the problem. Worst case scenario destroying the engine. Good luck.

BTW, asking folks on line will get you a lot of different answers. Since diagnosing something without it being present is impossible in most cases these day. Unless you are looking for somebody else's previous experience and possible fix. That ends up going back to replace this and that.

As has been stated, there are many reasons why the Check Engine light can come on. You will need the exact trouble code(s) before anyone can give you some reasonable suggestions. Also provide the engine (5.0L, 3.5L, etc.,)

If you have an Auto Zone in the area, they apparently do free code scans so you could get the code(s), their report, and then return here with the codes and ask for further assistance. That the truck runs rough, and that you indicated you're not very experienced, you may need to take the truck in for repairs but you should atleast know the codes and check with this community to have some information to help prevent getting taken advantage of.

Its most likely the knuter valve behind the wheel. It's a known problem in these parts...
