Extra truck key
Is it possible to program a third key on a 2017 XLT without going to the dealer? The manual says it is a dealer only thing. It is not the intelligent access fob. It is the switchblade type key.

Worst hairday ever...
I have the same type key as in the picture. I went to a local locksmith and paid about $125 for the key, cutting, and he programmed it using the two factory keys I brought with. He warranties the key for a year if any problems.
I've seen the blank keys on ebay for $70-90, don't know what it would cost to have them cut if you bring your own. The local Ace hardware stores around town weren't able to cut this kind of key.
Dealer wanted $250+ to cut and program a third key.

They are center cut keys. The normal places that cut keys won't be able to cut them like walmart, lowes, home depot, hardware stores, ect. It will take a very up to date locksmith or a large Ford dealer may also be able to do it. I got lucky and found an Autonation Ford dealer to cut my Ebay $25 transponder key blank for me. When I called them, the guy in parts said it would be around a $10 charge, but when I walked in, he just cut it and said have a nice day, no charge. The one locksmith in my area who could also do it would have charged me $35.
You can program it yourself as long as you already have two programmed keys. Look in the security section of your owners manual for instructions.
Now I have a spare key I keep hidden in a magnetic box tucked inside the rear tow reciever in case I get locked out for a total cost of $25.

I ordered 2 of these (Strattec is OEM maker and they have the Ford logo), dealer charged $15 each to cut them and I programmed them myself. Total for 2 spare keys, about $65.

So by "programmed" you are saying the anti-theft chip only? These keys don't have the lock/unlock/remote start functions on them? I ask because the OEM key is in such a place that my other fob rubs my leg when I drive and it is making me a little crazy A smaller key might help.
