Explain DRL's
The DRL's for the trims with LED headlights are just the low beams on but at a reduced output. I've switched the lights on vs having them off with DRL while looking at reflection from a truck in front. There is a difference. Now that I have my MORIMOTO XB LED fog lights, I prefer to put on the parking lights with the fogs for DRL purposes.
You are correct that the low beam is the DRL. As for thinking Ford will change it to be cooler, well, lets see...safety over cool factor....I think safety will win. However if Ford were to change the outer amber ring to dual amber / white they could easily have that as the DRL since several other manufacturers already do this.

In addition, even if the DRL is switched on via the gauge cluster setting, they will not illuminate unless the headlight switch is in the auto position and the truck is in a drive gear. If the headlight switch is off, the DRL stays off.
Interesting, as DRL's should be on regardless of the switch position.
Here's the answer for US trucks, Canada models may be different.
DRL if equipped is low beam at reduced power they only come on with engine running and in drive. The tail lights do not come on. if you have auto lights and DRL's are activated they only come on if switch is in the auto position and engine on in drive.
