Ford actually intended to only use the shutters on EB engines for increased fuel economy. But during testing they notice the shutters benefited thermal management more than aerodynamics so they equipped all models with them.

Engines run most efficient when they are hot. Add that modern synthetic based fluids lubricating capability is best at high temperatures. The shutters and electric cooling fans give the PCM a lot of flexibility of keeping engine temperature in the sweet spot.

I heard if you take your hood off it will cool the engine massively while driving. In fact if you also remove the windshield it will cool or warm you depending on ambient outside temps

My '17 3.5 runs at 205*-210* during normal drives, and as high as 220* on a long uphill pull while towing my Jeep. It doesn't hang there long though...it quickly comes back down. These are the numbers as shown on the factory dash above the dummy gauge (unlocked with Forscan).

Trans temp stays right around 200* when towing in the summer, otherwise its around 190* or a little lower.

My question is why run the engine hotter?

Better fuel economy ?

Or to meet EPA standards?
Engine efficiency. Generally speaking, the hotter the engine the greater the thermal efficiency it has.
