Ecoboost upgrades
Just got my 2018 f150 2.7 ecoboost. Love the truck so far. It’s a lease that I’ll probably end up buying. Looking for upgrades with MPG in mind. I know a pickup isn’t about MPG, but I needed one and would like to increase it anyway I can without voiding the warranty. Thoughts of what to do and in what order? More power is also appreciated, but it’s really about effiency for me. I drive relatively easy already. Thanks guys!
Usually a tune can provide both, but the biggest mod is that ball of goo between the ears. Train it to be light on the right foot, and not so heavy on the brakes. Imagine an egg on the gas pedal when driving, and don't be braking all the way to a stop, instead prepare for the stop in advance and let the truck slow on it's own, especially when there are traffic lights, riding the brakes just wastes gas and wears out pads. You could put a cover or cap on the bed, will give a touch more MPG, but whatever you do, don't remove the tailgate, or you will waste gas.
I do drive like that most of the time. Always in eco mode, and looking ahead to coast whenever possible. I do have a hard time not doing 80 on the highway as it’s such a smooth ride. But I would say I’m definitely a conscientious driver. The tune won’t void the warranty?

If you ask this forum, some will say "the tune will not void the warranty unless the tune itself can be proven to cause the problem", but in reality a bad dealership who refuses to honor a warranty will leave you STUCK, regardless of the problem.
Very good point! I will ask them about the tune and the warranty. But I have a hard time trusting them with their suggestions as I’m sure they will recommend whatever makes them the most money. That’s why I came to you guys. Figuring people who work on these engines all the time and have tried different mods in different order might have some “magic system” to get 40 mpg and 650 HP....

Seriously though you definitely gotta check with dealer that will service vehicle if mods okay.
Also check your lease agreement. Most strictly prohibit mods, so while your warranty may stay in tact you'd be breaking the lease agreement and have to pay or something.
With a lease I've only see guys do rims and tires, the ballsy ones get a tuner, and return to factory when they take it in.
Tune it, get steel wheels instead of your aluminum ones, get lighter tires, remove your 4wd components, remove the extra seats, pull out the ac components, lower it, remove unnecessary door panels, remove the headliner, only keep 5 gallons or so of gas in the tank, turn it off when rolling down big hills, swap the engine with a corolla engine....some of these will void your warranty.
sorry I couldn’t resist lol. But seriously, if my main goal was mpg, I would keep the wheel and tire package as low weight/resistance as possible, level the truck by removing the rear block, and keep all of the aerodynamic stuff on...so your air dam, etc. wind resistance is what I believe to be our biggest killer of mpg next to tires.

If it were a Gen 1 EB, a 5* tune would be a good choice as they are pretty safe. Considering it is a 2.7 though, I don't think 5* has a tune for the latest gen with 10 spd, but you can check with them. I ran 5* in my 14 and got 20+ almost all the time and hit 24, and this is with the 3.5 EB, and had the power to play. Loved that truck! Tried it in my 16 and there is just something about this truck that the tune didn't give me the same satisfaction.
I can tell you from experience that a dry flow air filter, bed cover, and 48 psi in your tires will improve around 1 mpg, at least on a 3.5. You probably won't make any large gains on these trucks. They are already set up for fuel economy. Driving style is largest factor. I can get up to 19 city when I anticipate what's coming and make sure I back out of the throttle once up to speed. If I don't do that it can drop a couple mpg easy.
The good thing is you have a 2.7. Drive it nice and you'll get amazing mpg for a truck.
