Say what you want, Mazda has some really cool engine engineering. Check out "Engineering explained" on youtube, the guy digs deep into the theory on some of that stuff.

the 2.3 ecoboost was co-developed with Mazda back in the early-mid 2000s and the first iteration was the MZR-DISI found in the mazdaspeed3/6...which had FORD stamped all over it (literally). I think Ford said "here Mazda, use this direct injection new technology yourselves and see how it works out". We learned quickly that carbon buildup on intake valves got BAD and needed to be cleaned, really, at like 60k miles or so......and necessitated walnut blasting after removing the intake manifold. Not easy. Motor was great though. Stout and solid.
The 2.0 ecoboost and new 2.3 ecoboost bare bones blocks are nearly identical, with minor changes to the cylinder heads for different cam timing actuators, etc. But then Mazda and Ford divorced. Ford kept the ecoboost/turbo engines.

Save the Manuals!
Aside from the rust issues Mazda makes some fantastic cars.
