Diagnostics without check engine light on
I am new to this forum so please forgive any breaches of etiquette. Every forum I have ever been a part of seems to have it's own set of written and unwritten rules. For the record though I have already learned quite a bit from just an hour or so of reading various threads and looks forward to more.
My problem is this. I bought a used '19 XLT with the 5.0L v8. Had about 27500 miles on it then, and now has roughly 29k. About a week after buying it, I was at a stop light and the engine started idling poorly and the check engine light came on. Had AutoZone pull the code and it was P0022- Intake Camshaft Position – Timing Over-Retarded. I was quite pissed because I have had this same issue on my wife's 2010 Pathfinder and after changing everything that could supposedly cause it, I finally got rid of the darn thing. I called the dealership the next morning and made an appointment for service later that week. A day or so later, the light went away. Called the dealership and they said that with no code to pull, there isn't any reason to bring it in. Since then, I have had 3 more instances of the same thing and most recently, a stall while waiting at a drive thru. Each time the CEL lights up , but before I can get an appointment it goes away again (usually within 1-2 days). I have ~ 7000 miles remaining on my factory warranty and want this addressed before it runs out. Does anyone know if there is something that can be done to diagnose the issue without the presence of the trouble code?

A. find a new dealership
B. when the CEL illuminates, the codes are stored. Even if it clears, the codes are still in there.
C. when you get the light, drive to the dealer immediately
D. P0022 is an issue with the VCT system. Could be an expensive repair, so you definitely want it in under warranty. Fortunately, you should have a 4/50 powertrain warranty, so you've got some breathing room.
