Why is this thread still going? The 2.7 needs no defense...

To be clear, the 2.7 was tested on the baja. I don't particularly know if that was a really a good durability test though.

The 3.5 and 2.7 were both tested there (apparently the 3.5 added more durability testing than just the race).

Ford has been building the Ecoboost 2.7 and 3.5 for quite a few years now. They have been refined and improved and reliability is great on both. F150 sales figures are pretty good proof of that. I replaced a 2016 5.0 with a 2018 3.5 Ecoboost because I like the tremendous torque of the 3.5. It comes on at low-mid range RPMs and feels like a muscle car running thru the gears at half throttle. Towing is effortless. If you have enough willpower to stay out of the boost, either Ecoboost motor will give decent mileage considering that you are moving a 5,000 pound brick-shaped object thru the air. Back to the 2.7; it is a very impressive performer, especially for its size. I suspect Ford plans to keep it around for many years to come.

I have the 2.7 and am getting the 3.5 next.

I love the 2.7 but

For the 1mpg difference of the 2.7, it's worth having the extra power.

Also the 2.7 runs out of steam by 3k rpm and there's no good way to upgrade the turbos as they are build into the exhaust manifolds.
