The only real reason i use it is if i want to switch between playlists without picking up my phone, beyond that if I want good directions with alerts like Waze I just turn CarPlay off.

I figured I would post my experience with this update. I came from Version 1.0 on a early build on my 2016 Lariat non-Sony. My wifi is just a little to weak outside my house so Connecting and trying to download over wifi was not an option for me. So i opted for the USB method. With the original USB hub/module still in the truck I took a cheap Micro Center USB stick wtih 64GB of space and formatted it using my MacBook Pro. I realized that when uncompressing the files they were not in the folders like they are supposed to be. Instead the name of the file actually had the folder name with a slash. Once I manually corrected this and moved the files over i plugged it into the truck and let it start the update. I waited in my driveway with the truck running for about 45 minutes and it still said updating, i noticed my USB activity had stopped though. I decided to go for a drive and drove the truck for another 45 minutes before deciding to unplug the drive and plug it back in.
Nothing seemed to happen at this point the screen just said updating at the top and did not change. I turned the truck off with it still unplugged and after about a minute it started to say updating again. Frustrated a Drove home and parked it for the night. The next morning i started the truck, no USB attached and it still said updating. When i got to where i was going I did a Master Reset on the system. That stopped the constant updating message.
Decided to try again, after about an hour it still had not completed. This time i left the USB plugged in and shut the truck off. The next morning I got in and it did the same thing, said it was updating. I drove the truck about 10 minutes and went to an appt. Upon reentering i noticed the Ford Logo was stuck on the screen for a good 3-5 minutes. But FM radio was playing, i could not change the station or change the volume. When it finally got past the logo i noticed it had updated to 2.2 amazing! My Navigation was not working though, great. I restarted the truck once more this time it booted normally and Navi and Gracenotes were all updated.
No idea why it took so long and finally completed after an overnight, 10 minute drive and one reset but whatever it's done.
Changing the hub was a piece of cake, i used a small pry bar, wrapped the tip in electrical tape and popped one side then the other. I was able to route my USB cable from behind the dash and fish it through the hole where the USB hub sits. I dremaled out a small section for the wire to fit through and reinstalled everything.
My overall impression of CarPlay is less then perfect. Hopefully Apple makes it much better. I hate Apple Maps it never takes me to the right place. Would prefer to use Waze. Would like to have two different apps open, one on each screen, can't do that right now. My wife loves it though so whatever, glad I did it. Happy Wife happy life right?

Success! Success! We've done it! We've done it!
The upgrade was successful after performing a Master Reset of the SYNC system. I plugged in the USB drive and within about 20 minutes the upgrade was complete. Installing the USB Module wasn't as bad as I had anticipated. Getting the USB cable form the back disconnected was the hardest part.
So finally, a year after getting my truck, I finally have CarPlay. Thanks to this forum for all the help!

I have V2.2 right now but it's the preliminary version 168...
I'm looking for the 17011 version. That's why Ford says I don't have an update. I've got a 17 F150 Lariat SCrew that I bought in late 16. I hear it isn't any different but I'm stubborn and want it for myself.

I'm in a similar situation, I've got the old build and the website is telling me I'm up to date. The link in the initial post no longer works. Does anyone still have the file downloaded for the non-nav version that they can upload somewhere?

I'm starting to have some stability issues. Ver. 2.0 was already in from the factory. After hub install Carplay was working perfectly. In the last couple of weeks it's started reconnecting every few minutes or more and will sometimes lock up in the middle of a voice text or phone call. Any ideas?
