My dealership installed the hub for free, as a courtesy, since they thought it was crap that FORD was making people pay it.

However, the FORD dealership can't get 2.2 on my vehicle as it fails half way through. They contacted Ford and Ford stated that based on my VIN, i have 1.1 and can't get 2.0 or 2.2 as of yet. So they're computers won't install to my vehicle.

I don't have the OLD HUB as they kept it, when my new HUB was installed.. I should have asked for it. Stupid ME.

You are in uncharted waters as far as dealerships are concerned. Hey at least they were nice to you and tried! Give them about another year to get up to date.

Default My follow up opinion...

So it's been a few weeks since I've completed this upgrade and here's my thoughts on CarPlay.

CarPlay pros:
Pandora and Spotify are way more stable now than with Mobile Apps in Sync. I was constantly losing the apps and after making phone calls they wouldn't come back on nor show in the screen without unplugging the iPhone and plugging it back in. Now they are there.

Phone calls are better. I would constantly drop Bluetooth in Sync during calls. Very stable now.

Watching videos on YouTube, SnapChat, Facebook etc are now in sync audio and visual. Prior there was always a very noticeable delay between audio and visual.

CarPlay Cons:
Voice Phone Calls. If you have no/limited internet signal on your cell Siri will not work, therefore no voice calls. So your either going for the head unit or you phone anyways.

Messaging. I guess the whole point of CarPlay is to be hands free mainly but I don't want my messages read to me, I want to see them. Also when I have tried to do voice messages it's never what I say. Might just be my voice but I don't like it regardless.

Maps. Self explanatory. Apple maps is horrible and it doesn't translate well to this either. I'll use my dated Sync 3 service and compare it to Google Maps before I drive anyhow.

I hate having to go back to Sync just to see the temperature and to get to my settings. It's minor but a nuisance.

Thats basically everything in regards to my usage. It's an okay interface. The stability with Pandora was a plus but that's still dependent on your cell service. Some nagging cons but I'm not regretting the upgrade.

The dealer has ordered a audio control module for the truck. Ford stated it has something to do with the remote start and Sync 3 booting up in cold weather. The dealership currently has three trucks in with the same problem. They are all Lariats with push start ignitions. Only one of the three trucks has Sync 3 2.2 and the others have Sync 3 V1.

Default Sync 3 carplay update

Doing the install right now. Part one, no problems. Part two downloading now. USB hub after that. I'll let you know how it goes!

UPDATE....
So I did the install for the sync 3 2.2 update last night. It was pretty easy and took maybe 15 minutes between both updates. Today I grabbed a hook pull from a tech in the shop, popped out the original USB (don't be afraid to use a little muscle but you only need to pull from one side to get it out), unplugged the wide grey plug which appears to be power (very simply, used the hook pull to push down a small square where it was holding in place and it came right out) but had a little more trouble with the black plug (almost looks like a phone jack). It appears the "stay" where the plug snaps is inside the plug so with a little effort from the hook pull to get in there, a couple of minutes of fiddling around and a whole lot of luck it came out. Snapped in those plugs no problem and pushed the new USB back in with no trouble at all. After that I turned my truck on, let it start up completely, plugged in my phone to the USB and waited for a minute. Maybe it was my impatience but I started messing with the screen and couldn't get it to work. I unplugged the phone, plugged it back in and BAM Apple Carplay on my screen in like 5 seconds. Works like a charm. Glad I didn't waste the extra money on the nav.

Not sure who discovered the process or the update but thank you to everyone involved! This was super easy and I'm glad you guys took the time to spread the love. The guys in my shop didn't even know it could be done yet. Pretty sad Ford keeps them in the dark, but I'm sure they have their reasons, I just don't know what they are lol

Success!!!

Just wanted to say thank you for this forum and information!

One attempt to remove from the front and said.....no way this will be easy.

Removed trim from passenger side center console, really easy by just pulling and popping the clips out.

Then removed the rear cover to the center console behind the USB port for full access.

Felt for the tabs and squeezed my fingers in there and pressed the tabs down while pushing on the back and it slid right out.

Tied off the wires with a couple pieces of fishing line so they didn't drop back in. Each connector for the hub had a small clip, removed the old and connected the new. Plugged in my phone and Apple Car Play came right up, accepted and looks beautiful.

All in all really easy to swap out, maybe 20 minutes tops.

I did the update last night using the files for this forum and all went well. Completed in less then 30 minutes, I didn't stay in the truck while updating either portion so not sure on the exact time. I did not do the USB port swap I only have an Android phone so no need for Apple Carplay. The update work great no issues, Sync 3 started as usual after restarting vehicle.

Thanks to all that made the update files available and the great instructions to do the update.

Default Thanks guys

Another successful update to 2.2 (w/nav) this morning. Picked up the newer blue-light USB hub yesterday at my local Ford dealer and boom....CarPlay. Thanks to all who contributed to our success!

My son and I just did a successful update on his 2016 F150. V 1.0 to V 2.2 without Nav. Absolutely no issues and everything works great. He has an Android phone. It is really awesome to see Google Maps come up on the screen.

Does the update fix the terrible search function of the Navigation? Ive tried the search button for 3 businesses and it could not find any of them...They have been around for over 10 years & ford navi cannot find them lol....Anyhow I had to go into google maps to find there literal address so ford navi can find them.........crap
