Default Coolant question.

Hi all. 2018, XLT. 3.5 eco. Max tow. 26k miles. I had my cam phasers done this week at the Ford dealership. I had the red coolant in my truck when I brought it in. I asked what coolant they use. They said they don't use the red anymore. Now they use the green coolant. When I got the truck back after the fix I was expecting to see green coolant, but I still had the red in the overflow. I called Ford and they said they reuse what they can and top off with the green. Is this standard practice? And can you mix the 2 coolants together?

They haven't used green in forever (2003). They should have replaced your original orange coolant with yellow. You can find all your coolant specs at this link:

So they should have replaced my coolant with the new yellow stuff? Instead of reusing my old coolant and topping off with the new stuff.

It would have been better. But you only had 26K miles on the original coolant, so it's not the end of the world. If you didn't ask them to change it before they performed the work, I wouldn't complain about it now. When you get it changed eventually, get it changed to the newest version.

Is Green suitable for a 2018? I thought green has all the abrasive material? Green is available for aluminum motors?

I don't know the answers to those questions -I am asking, not commenting.

I got the colors wrong. My 18 has the orange coolant in it. The new coolant is yellow. Sorry about the confusion.

From Ford:
Topping off, Draining and Refilling:
• Motorcraft Yellow Antifreeze/Coolant can be used to top-off or entirely replace (drain and refill) antifreeze/coolant in vehicles factory-filled with Motorcraft Orange Antifreeze/Coolant and Motorcraft Specialty Green Engine Coolant.

Ford Engineering has approved the use of yellow-colored Motorcraft Yellow Antifreeze/Coolant (Ford specifications WSS-M97B57-A1 and WSS-M97B57-A2) to service all Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles factory-filled with the following antifreeze/coolants:

• Orange-colored Motorcraft Orange Antifreeze/Coolant (Ford specifications WSS- M97B44-D and WSS-M97B44-D2)
• Dark green-colored Motorcraft Specialty Green Engine Coolant with Bittering Agent (Ford specification WSS-M97B55-A)

Important: Do not use Motorcraft Yellow Antifreeze/Coolant to service Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles factory-filled with any other Motorcraft antifreeze/coolant. In the case of these vehicles, Motorcraft Yellow Antifreeze/Coolant is not compatible and therefore is not approved for use. Continue to service these vehicles using only the correct recommended antifreeze/coolant.

Thanks for the replies. So,why did Ford stop using the orange coolant? Is there something wrong with it. Should I flush and fill with the yellow coolant 🤔

Green is IAT (Inorganic Additive Technology), Orange is OAT (Organic Acid Technology) and Yellow is Hybrid Organic Technology. I think it is an improvement. Orange is the old Dexcool.
