They must have changed mid year some time.
A coworker has an '18, and the mode switch is still on the console, not the shifter.
I'm almost certain the drive-mode button change was made with the move to the 10-speed transmission, which should include all 2018's except for the non-turbo engine, which I believe still uses the 6-speed.
Not trying to be pedantic here, this may aid you in finding replacement parts if you can use 2018 pieces...

No, no, I appreciate it.
Hers is a Platinum 10spd, and the console has the cut out for the button, which mine does not...but both are silver anyway
Both my 16 and 19 Limiteds had/have the drive mode button on the side of the shifter. Pic from the old one:
Must be the Limited trim.
That, or typical Ford, that if you see enough of the same model, you'll eventually find the rare or one offs, that supposedly didn't come that way.
I have a 19 STX in Black trim that I may be interested in swapping with. It has the opening for the shifter, I would assume that the only difference is the parts that attach to the trim like the shifter plate etc. You could keep your sliding door. My other vent trim will not work due to options that you have and I do not
