Default Cheap air filter mod

I had a gift card to auto zone so I figured I would by a cheap reusable air filter (30 bucks). I also went to Home Depot and bought a 3" pvc coupling ($1.50). I took out my old air box and tried to install the pvc pipe into the stock rubber piping. I got the coupling to fit the new filter side but it was almost the same size if not bigger than the stock piping side. I had to heat up one side of the coupling and use a hose clamp and tighten it so the opening would shrink. After that it slid right in and I tightened everything up. Noticed the filter kinda bounced around a bit so I fabed up a bracket I had in the tool box to keep it from bouncing while driving. It sounds really good when you get on it. Defiantly hear that baby sucking. Figured when I have to go to the dealership I would just put the stock box back in. Probably only a 10 min job to do that. May not be for everyone but I was bored so have a goodin!!!

It looks nice, but why'd you do it? I believe you traded a stock cold air intake with some ram air capabilities for an aftermarket hot engine air intake. I think the stock air intake and filter element is probably the best one you can get.

This article is most likely biased against K&N and for AC, however it looks like they did some real testing and the general principle applies.

No, I wouldn't recommend throwing it away. It is a way to flow more air, however you might be flowing more warm air as well. If you could somehow incorporate the OEM air box with that filter to flow more cool outside air, that might help a little. The way it is now, you might of gained some high RPM HP. Overall, looks pretty good and kudos to you for making another modification by trial and error. I bet it does sound good when you give it gas!
Have Fun!

Spectre filters are JUNK! They were sued because false claims of ppm filtering and hp claims. They let all kinds of dirt onto your MAF and those arent cheap.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Like I said it's not for everyone. I just wanted to try something different and it was cheap. I haven't lost any hp or tq by the seat of the pants feel. I'll keep an eye out and see how dirty it gets. I guess I better save money up for them throttle bodies...... Lol

So why would you trade your factory cold air intake for an extremely cheap hot air intake?
