Cam Phasers....again
I had the cam phaser rattle occur beginning last spring and had it diagnosed in June and after a 3 week wait for parts all four cam phasers were replaced at the end of June. Fast forward to 1000 miles and two weeks ago and I hear a rattle again. This time it is louder and continues longer, cycling through before eventually quieting down. Over four or five starts in a week it got progressively worse. I took it back to the dealer and they agreed there is a problem and either the new phasers or the solenoids were a problem. I left the truck with the dealer today and the technician just sent a video showing his progress. He said he and others pinpointed the noise to the new phasers. He also said the VCT solenoids were taken off and inspected for debris and nothing found. He did make a fuss pointing the camer into the cam valley about how clean the engine was inside.
I get it that the phasers can fail again and it's better sooner than later. I have seen myself brand new parts or equipment fail or not work unexplainably. My concern is the VCT solenoids. Is there a testing protocol beyond inspection for testing or should they, out of caution, be replaced?

The question I've asked several times on these posts is what phaser version were installed? HL3Z or ML3Z part numbers?
Some folks had the work done early on with HL3Z which means they will fail again. Last spring you may or may not have had the new ML3Z parts installed. I don't know if I have read any confirmed cases of a repeat failure on ML3Z, but I am not ruling it out yet.

ML3z per the invoice given me after the initial repair. This was this summer, 2-1/2 months ago that the first replacement was done. You have a confirmed failure now. My question that I wasn't able to get out of the dealer is what the root cause was failed parts or an issue with the oil pressure system.

Bummer. Should have not needed repeat work. I'll be curious about what they find, and hopefully it's more than a shrug and just replacing them again.
I don't think they would have wrote down the new and used the old part number, but they are easy to visually identify if you want to confirm.
