I changed my oil in my new car at 1k miles and my 16 2.7 at 600 miles. The truck was done at 600 because I took it to NY fro NC and wanted fresh oil in it for the trip.
The oil in the truck was about a year old because I bought the truck in 17 as a prior year left over.
I like to change the oil the first time early and then every 5k afterwards. I found that original oil will have metal in it from new engine mating of parts and possibly some manufacturing particles in it as well.
I used to change the oil in my motorcycles at 50 miles and you could see the metal in the oil when the sun shined on it as well as clutch material. Granted the oil in the motorcycle also lubricated the transmission the same cause of particles that the filter can't pick up pertain to the car and truck motors.
I just feel better knowing that the initial oil might get rid of most of the metal that the engine will produce once it is broke in.
Since my first two years of oil changes are free at the dealership I take advantage of an early oil change.

Some replies are quite funny.
When you all run a fleet of ford vehicles from factory to 200k miles with no special break in period or any pampering from day 1.. well - you'd be glad you didn't waste your money on history nonsense!

Hasn't been necessary for MANY years. My family's record, using this recipe, along with good maintenance:
'97 Expedition - 188K
'01 Expedition - 150K
'01 F150 - 95K, totalled
'03 F150 - 180K
'05 F350 - 97K, 6.D'OH motor, traded early
'07 F150 - 225K
'08 Mariner - 150K
'09 F150 - 195K, friend owns this one now
'10 F150 - 225K
'14 F150 - 80K, still in service
Not a motor problem between them, save for the 6.D'OH, which was a known design defect. Never noticed any oil consumption, either.

All of this unwarranted focus on the engine breaking-in. The engine is pretty much broken in when you pick it up. What break-in there is, is for the transmission, diffs and brakes. Hence the no or light towing for the 1st 1000 miles. There is no need for early oil changes.

So varying RPMs and not laboring the engine has nothing to do with the engine and is for other-than-the-engine?
