It can be done. I did this in 2011 with Ford Motor Credit and the new lessee has to have excellent credit to assume the lease. I used a site like swapalease.com and the local Ford dealer did the paperwork. The new owner flew in from Texas.
Turned out to be a lawyer who was the nephew of Harvey Mackay and I got a signed book a few weeks later in the mail. Super nice guy and when he satisfied all lease payments only then was I off the hook financially for the lease. He actually has sent me emails when he bought a 2014 truck so I could help him make a decsion on leveling and tires.

I leased a 2011 Jeep, then traded it 12 months later for a 2012 Jeep just like it because I wanted the new Pentastar engine. I didn't lose anything...my payment went up $30/month simply because the 2012 had more options.
A few years before that I leased a 2006 Silverado and traded it a year later for a 2007 Ram 1500 because the GM was still junk like they always had been.
Leases aren't prison sentences. Don't let people scare you. I've even put lifts, wheels, tires, tint, etc. on leased vehicles before. Never ever had to pay penalties ever when trading them off.
