went with the bak flip VP and cant be more happy. after installing a ultimate tailgate seal I get no water or dust in the bed now. I even sealed up the gaps along the bed seams with some big stretch black.

I got an Extang Trifecta a few weeks ago for the same reasons as you (typically have an open bed, but wanted something to keep stuff dry when needed). The Trifecta fits the bill nicely. About as water tight as you can get, light weight, easy to install and remove. It is a vinyl cover so will "wave" a little in the wind, but that's to be expected with a soft cover. $400 well spent.

I have a truxedo low pro, with the rebate that they offered and pricing through truckalterations.com (forum member) it was just at the $300 mark. It looks great and the adjustable tension is nice, it was warm when I installed it and now that it's cold I just loosened it up about 1/2 turn and it closes easy. The side rail velcro "floats" to aid in this as well. We've had a couple decent snowfalls and didn't have issues, lots of rain and all our hockey equipment stays dry.

I have used Access, and no name brand soft covers. The Access was far better. Now have a Bak Flip. The Bak Flip is most weather proof.
My suggestion is to look at Craigslist as these covers are sold used often for half price or less. Their useful life is significant and people sell when trading in their truck or putting on a "cap".

I bought the Gator. Its very similar to any of the soft trifold tops on the market, and it was only $220 factory direct. There was a small gap at the front bulkhead of the bed where the bed rail caps are higher that allowed a small amount of water in. I just used the tailgate seal they sent with the tonneau to seal that gap. Cheap, works good and the bed is always dry.

I've had the Truxedo Lo-Pro that's been transferred between 3 trucks in 5 years. Only leaks if I run through a high pressure wash and has never stretched or popped open. Amazing cover for the money!

X2 - Another vote for the Extang Trifecta. I have always purchased the "Signature" version which has a burlap-like finish on it that I like much better (for looks and function) than the standard vinyl. I'm on my 3rd one (on different trucks) and all have served me well.
