Will a 2014 extender fit on 2016? I know the years switch when buying parts but are they really that different?

Yes they are! I have one in mine. Screws and locks in on the sides. The difference is, the 09-14 extender comes out a bit towards the ends of the tailgate, making the yellow locking pin misaligned to the 15+ hole on the tailgate bam panel by couple inches.

I don't find it as an issue since you have two T-locking pins on the sides to hold the extender in place. I've been using this always when I get the chance.
