Basic Off-Road mods for a 4x2
I used to wheel my Tacoma in 2wd with 4wd to get me out if needed.
If you engage the locker that'll help a LOT by not letting one tire spin on wet grass, or if it comes off the ground.
Avoiding mud and soft sand will help, unless it's a short crossing you can use speed to get across (that can apply to 4wd's as well, just due to the nature of mud).
If you don't get a winch, get a strap and a wheel with a friend. If one of crosses a questionable section at a time, the other can do recovery work if the crossing is unsuccessful. Ideally you shouldn't be wheeling alone anyway in case you get injured or break down.
You can get a nice stretch recovery strap (acts kind of like a bungee cord, amplifying the pulling power of the other truck, and no jerking like with a chain) and shackles to connect the loop ends to recovery rings on the truck on Amazon. Amazon beat the prices of any of the local stores I looked at for mine.
