Has anyone used balance beads in their tires with good results? I used 8oz in each of my 275/65-18 Goodyear Wrangler Ultraterrain AT because they were hard to balance. They are fine under 60 mph but sometimes have a vibration 65 mph and over, but not always? I think I'm going back to wheel weights.
I was always told by reputable 4x4 shops not to use balance beads for tires under 35 inches, if they can’t be balanced properly and aren’t some crazy size, it’s an issue with the tire.
I tried them ONCE in snow tires for my Buick. I had spare Rims, a set for summer and a set for winter. I used my car for work and Averaged 100 miles a day from leaving in the AM than back home at the end of the day.
Any who.... the beads were not consistent in keeping the tires in balance. Some mornings on the way into work at highway speeds 50+ mph, they were just ok. MOST of the time i could feel them out of balance. It seem like the colder it was the worse it was. Like there was moisture in the tire, the would clump when frozen. By the end of the day it seem a little better, but nothing consistent.
NO. NOPE, Don't do it.
There are those in the motorcycle community who swear by balance beads, and those who swear at them,
For a balance bead to move into place the tire must shake out of balance, else the bead doesn't move. But the bead will move with any bump in the road. So every bump puts the tire out of balance, it has to shake to put the bead back. One gets at least 2 bumps in the road for the price of 1!
The bead vendors will tell you up front the tire can not be balanced on a spin balancer or static balancer once beads are installed. This is because neither can shake the beads into place. The spin balancer holds the wheel rigidly in place when it spins so the beads can not move.
