Default Bak Box 2 Mod

I have the Bak Revolver with the Bak Box 2, and I love having both. But I was disappointed that the Bak Box covered the front Box Link anchor point, so I modified the Bak Box to slide forward to the front of the bed to give at least partial access to that point. I'll start by acknowledging this is a pretty specific mod, and may not be worth doing for everyone. But for me, it created enough space to transport my bike and access that anchor point, so I thought I would share.

I started by cutting the top two inches off the top of the side frames that hold the Bak Box. Then I used two 1/2" pieces of wood to create an offset with a drawer slide. I riveted the slide to the larger portion of the Bak frame, so now it sits all the way to the front of the bed in its stored position. When I need something out of it, I just slide it forward, and at full travel it is more accessible than the original installation. When folded up, the Bak Box now takes up less than 2 inches at the front of the bed.

As far as limitations, it still doesn't provide full access to the Box Link anchor point, but gives me about 3/4 access - enough to attach bungee cords or straps to it. Also, I suspect that when fully loaded, the weight will shift the box back and forth, so I'm working on a way to hold it in the stored condition. More of a concern, I'm not sure how well the drawer slides will hold up to weather, but (a) I'm in Southern California and (b) I'm hoping the Revolver provides enough protection from moisture to make it last. Anyway, in case this helps someone else, or gives them a better idea, I'm posting it here.

This is the position the Bak Box 2 sits in as installed originally. It wastes about 5 inches of space at the front of the bed, and covers the Box Link anchor point.

This is the new stored position, all the way to the front of the bed.

At full extension, the box is even more accessible than before, as it now slides all the way out from under the rolled up Revolver.

Great write up. Did you ever come up with a way to keep it from sliding back and forth while driving? Overall how has it held up?

Nice mod, some way to lock it in place would be ideal. Seems like with any weight in it, you’re likely to slide around. I suppose you could tie something between the two boxlink anchor points to hold it though.

These slides should have small dent when in the closed position, that might be enough to hold it in place. If not you could try changing it to soft close model, they have a much stronger closer and will even pull it back if it slides out a little.
