I bought my 2013 F150 used around 3 years ago and have never had a problem with the back up camera. Over the last year the camera has worked intermittently but in the last two weeks it very rarely works. When it does not work, the screen will go black and flashes the message "Camera is unavailable. Please contact your dealership".
I have unplugged the wiring harness in the tailgate from the camera and removed and replaced the fuse.
Has anybody had this issue before or have any insight on what it may be/solutions?
You need to replace the camera then it MAY need to be reprogrammed, you can use Forscan. DO NOT BUY (IMO) anything other than a Ford part! Aftermarket cameras do not work with the backup bumper sensors and the quality from what I have read, is not all that good.
Just replaced my wifes Edge and reprogrammed with Forscan, all good again. My 13 has been doing this for about 3 months, strangely enough, it seems to be back on all the time now.
I have been trying to get to the bottom of my friend's blue screen off of his used 2018 F150 XLT. So far I have done all the usual things including a new Ford camera, di-electric grease etc. These fixes did not last.
Reading the threads here offered up a few new ideas to try that have worked such as connectors in the kick panel and re-grounding the camera black wire into a new location. Yesterday I had the tailgate apart and decided to trace out the general wiring loom. I located the ground point suggest by submitters, and decided to sand it bare then coat it with grease for good measure as it was corroded.
The wiring loom leaves the tailgate and routes through the bed body just in front of the spare tire. I'd toyed with doing the suggested detour of the "camera black wire" to the aforementioned ground point. A Molex plug there was full of dust and sand which I cleaned with contact cleaner and di-electric grease.
There I found a non Ford green wire tie and 3M electrical tape ........a clue! Unraveled the tape was green from corrosion. Worse still, the bush league crimp connections fell apart.
I soldered the individual wires, heat shrank them and used factory black conduit making it look factory. I also zip tied the loose looms left in a sloppily done manner. I apologize that I didn't take an after photo. It looks more like what I expect to see I assure you!
So the takeaway is: if you see some sloppy workmanship, somewhere close you may discover a horror show. Let's hope that my repair fixes the issue permanenntly.
