Attempting something new (help needed)
Hi Everyone,
I’m the proud owner of a 2016 F150 Lariat. It is equipped with the 360-camera option, and 8” display. I purchased the ‘Customer Placed Trailer Camera’ kit for a 2017+ Super Duty and I’m going to attempt to install it on my F150. Here’s where I’m at so far…
Like many, my APIM is faulty. Today I temporarily installed an APIM from a 2018 F150 Limited with and without the donor display. It was suggested the APIM not VIN programmed to my vehicle would throw every DTC in the book. I’m pleased to report it was fully functional with no issues. This confirms an APIM programmed as a Super Duty which has input options for the ‘Customer Placed Trailer Camera’ is possible provided the Super Duty was equipped with all options present on my vehicle.
ChatGPT says the Image Processing Module A (IPMA) receives video signal input from the Centre High Mount Stop Light (CHMSL) camera where the Image Processing Module B (IPMB) receives input from the 360-camera system. However, strangely ChatGPT says the APIM receives input from the Customer Placed Trailer Camera.
That’s as far as I’ve got. I’ll report back with any updates.
thank you,
- Colin
Update [27/10/24]
I found the pinout for an F150 APIM (same as Super Duty) and pins 14 and 15 are for ‘video’. I assume this is video input from one of the IPMs but I’m going to check tomorrow to see if those are used on my F150. If they’re open, I’m honestly thinking ChatGPT might be right the Customer Placed Trailer Camera might input directly into the APIM (can it really be this simple?). If they’re utilized, then I suspect they’re coming from one of the IPMs.
Update [28/10/24]
I pulled the 54-pin connector apart and the wire colours did not match the pinout for the associate model / year. However, they do align with the 2018-2021 F150 pinout. Pins 14 & 15 are used but interestingly the ‘18-‘21 pinout lists them as coming from the IPMB.
Link to ‘18-‘21 pinout — https://pinoutguide.com/Car-Stereo-F...c_pinout.shtml Being that both diagrams only list pins 14 & 15 as video input signal wires, I’m thinking the IPMB might actually be the ‘brains’ of the operation. I’m currently searching for ‘17+ Super Duty APIM and IPMB pinout diagrams as well as an F150 IPMB pinout to compare. However, without having access to Ford wiring schematics I may have to visit a wrecker and go ‘old school’ on this.
