Approx. % increase of mpg while adding bed cover
Well, me speculating, they increase aerodynamic efficiency but not enough to really make a difference in fuel economy. BUT, if it's enough to keep the engine from going into boost at slightly higher loads/inclines, it could make a bigger difference.
But still not enough to appreciably save money on gas. Who's really going to notice the difference between 18mpg and 17.5mpg?

- If I use AC my mpg drops about that much.
- If I put on my roof rack it drops more.
- If I put on my bed topper I gain.
- If I drive in 4Hi I loose about that much.
- If I use ethanol free gas, I show the most gain of all.
I read a story a few years ago how they tested things that would increase MPG on semi's. For one thing they measure the fuel used in a very exact manner, not just when the pump shuts off. They also do a test similar to myth busters and drive two indentical trucks over real world roads. The difference they go to a lot of work and testing to make sure the trucks really are the same. They have tested fuel additives, aerodynamic aids this way. One trucks gets the supposed improvement and the other doesn't.
All I know is with my Toyota Pickup I get better mileage with the camper shell on it. Tests say one thing but it's noticeable on my truck (1 mpg better)and this has been tested many times over 230,000 miles
All I know is I have a way to secure valuables while out fishing/ hunting and it will keep my gear safe.
