As noted in my signature, I have a 2018 Lariat 502a. My truck has factory Nav. I have noticed when I am not using carplay that the factory nav map shows up on the homescreen. When I connect to carplay, I lose this and just have a big block that says Maps. I feel like I have had rentals where apple maps would show on the homescreen. I have looked through the settings and not found anything. Does anyone know if it is possible to have apple maps show on the homescreen?
Apple CarPlay or Android Auto replaces most of the functions of Sync 3 and doesn't work in a way to be only a part of the system. What you want isn't possible.
Huh? If I plug my iPone into the USB it replaces the sync apps with comparable Apple apps. Apple map pops right up and works just fine for me. Pretty new '18 so maybe a software update needed?

That's not what the OP wants AFAICT. Perhaps he's not being entirely clear?

Maybe some pictures will help. When I am not connected to USB or I disable CarPlay, I get the three boxes on my home screen. The map on the left, audio playing on the top right, phone on the bottom right. As soon as I connect to carplay, I just get the big box on the left that says maps. If I tap that it takes me straight to Apple maps as described because it replaces the Ford nav. I was wondering if there was anyway to get it to actually show Apple maps on this screen I stead of just the big black box.
This is the way it is supposed to work. Apple CarPlay along with Android Auto will stop the Sync App from running and replaces it with their own. When you don’t have CarPlay running the Nav looks at the phone plugged and Nav App on it. Mine has Wazes listed on it when I hit it, my screen goes to Waze maps. I don’t use CarPlay I use the Waze App in Sync mobile.

As of now, no.
When you plug your phone for CarPlay, the apps are “available” (hence the blackbox) but not “opened.” If you have AppleMaps open on the sync screen, but then go to your phone and close the app (like double tapping home screen and swiping it up), the AppleMaps will close on the sync screen as well, but will still be available. The sync screen acts like your phone’s home screen (apps are available, until you tap to open).
I don't think any car manufacturer can run CarPlay in a window within the native head unit home screen in lieu of the native nav map like OP wants. Some manufacturers allow the native nav system to run on their home screen at the same time CarPlay is running. Hyundai allows this. On our Santa Fe, when I toggle from CarPlay to the car's native home screen I still see the native nav and have full functionality (unlike Ford). I believe reading some months ago that VW also allows this.
I seem to recall that when using Waze with Sync 3 that the Waze screen does not show in the nav window of the home screen. You have to switch Waze full screen by selecting the option from the menu. I didn't like running Waze with Sync 3 as it seemed clunky, Waze crashed occasionally, any my iPhone got really warm (I didn't think that was good for it) - as mentioned in other threads on this forum. I don't experience that running Waze within CarPlay except that every once in a while Waze crashes while I'm trying to set my destination.
I don't expect Apple to ever collaborate with Ford integrating Apple maps with Sync 3 Applink as Ford did with Waze and Sygic.
